Moog Sub Phatty Analog Synthesizer Keyboard, 25-Key

No longer available at zZounds
Build huge, fat synth sounds with two oscillators plus the Sub oscillator, dial in distortion with Moog's Multidrive knob, and tweak it all in real time.

The Moog Sub Phatty is a two-oscillator analog synthesizer that's true to the style of vintage Moog synths -- with all the bells and whistles you'd expect from a Moog, and a few modern twists. It's got 25 keys, 31 knobs, and 13 switches, giving the player hands-on access to articulate sound-shaping capabilities. With two oscillators plus the Sub bass oscillator, an LFO, a noise generator, the Moog Ladder Filter, and Moog's new Multidrive circuit for distortion, this compact Moog monosynth makes it fun to hone in on the sound you're looking for. And once you've dialed in that awesome lead or synth-bass sound, you can save your favorite settings in 16 slots.

Moog Multidrive: Overdrive Your Synth

The Moog Sub Phatty is also the first synthesizer to feature Moog's Multidrive section, which adds warm overdrive when set to low, and turns the Sub Phatty into a screaming machine when dialed up. To build a gritty, harmonic-soaked synth sound, start by pushing your oscillator level controls past noon to begin overdriving the input of the filter section. Then, grab the Multidrive knob to dial in more overdrive, post-filter.

Sub Phatty for Sub-Bass

This little synth gets its name from the Sub oscillator found in the mixer section, which adds a square wave one octave below the primary oscillator to add some womp to your waves or build bassy percussive sounds. Between the Sub Phatty's two main oscillators, the noise generator, and the Sub osc, you have a seriously heavy toolbox read more for creating massive basses and cutting leads.

Analog Music Production Machine

A Moog is not just a synthesizer -- it's an analog music production machine. Whether you're looking to create luscious melodies and harmonies, deep basslines, or psychedelic synthetic percussive sounds, this synth can do it all. With a 25-key layout and total control of the internal analog engine, the Sub Phatty can cover a broad range of music styles, from classic rock to modern pop to industrial. And with 5-pin DIN MIDI I/O as well as USB MIDI, the Moog Sub Phatty is ready to integrate into your DAW rig.

Features:

- Monophonic analog synthesizer with 25 semi-weighted keys, 31 knobs, and 13 switches
- 16 user-assignable patches
- Pitch bend wheel and modulation wheel
- Six modulation types with source and destination options

If you're browsing analog synthesizers, then there's a good chance you're already familiar with Moog Music, and the pioneering role the company has played in the analog synthesizer marketplace since the 1960s. The 25-key Moog Sub Phatty continues the tradition, and is a great tool for dialing up phatty waveforms in any music production studio.

Moog Music Sub Phatty Analog Synthesizer

The Moog Sub Phatty has the soul and hands-on control of a vintage Moog synthesizer in an aggressive sound design machine. It has 25 keys, 31 knobs, and 13 switches that connect you directly to the analog heart of this powerful instrument.

Its oscillators have been designed to perform with unmatched clarity, and accuracy in any environment with no warm-up time necessary. They are fat, punchy and loaded with harmonic content.

A Multidrive circuit in the filter section totally transforms the sound of this analog synthesizer into a screaming beast. Create gritty attack, asymmetrical distortion, and saturated hard-clipping sounds that tear through the densest mix.

The mixer section houses a powerful square wave sub oscillator designed to add depth, thickness, and side splitting bass to any sound. In addition to this, a specially voiced noise generator has been incorporated for sculpting hard hitting, all analog percussion sounds and other sound effects.

The Sub Phatty joins the Moog arsenal with a boldly unique voice. Its engaging and dynamic interface fuses a connection between man and machine that opens the door to unprecedented sonic exploration.

I've never been a synth player, but I've always loved the sound of Moogs, and man, this is that sound. this just has loads and loads of *that sound*. as far as features go, it lacks a sequencer that most others seem to have. in fact, I'd originally considered the Mother because of that. but ultimately I decided wanted to play it, not program it and twist knobs. and for me this role is filled perfectly well with just a looper pedal, which can do overdubs too. so while it lacks a sequencer, I don't feel like I miss it. as for the lack of an arppegiator, it does have a setting on the source dial that is a randomized wave form which you can adjust the rate of, and can be dialed in to serve that function rather nicely. the build quality is excellent. metal and durable plastics, with easy to hold rubberized side surfaces. the keys are nicely weighted and responsive. ease of use is kind of a tricky question, because one of the reasons you get something like this is that you want something that's complicated to use. part of the fun is figuring out this byzantine mess of knobs. but for something that's supposed to be difficult to use, it's pretty easy to use. the presets are useful and varied, the manual explains a lot (yet still leaves much mystery), and it's a blast experimenting with it's various settings and functions. as for value, it's pretty good. there's a lot of other analog synths I looked at in the four-to-eight hundred price range that I looked at, and they all have different read more qualities and things the others don't, approach the matter in different ways. but this one really just fit all the things I was looking for, and I'm glad I chose this over all the others, and a very good value for the money. as for wow factor... it's a Moog. easily the most iconic brand of the industry. what more do you need? that's better than any arrangement of flashing lights to inspire wows!
