The Etherwave Pro has just won the 2005 Excellence In Design Award (EID). This bold, beautiful theremin is designed for the gigging musician. Drawing on his 50 years of experience, Bob Moog designed the next step in the evolution of the original electronic instrument, the Theremin. The Etherwave Pro is a step up from the best-selling theremin of all time, the Etherwave Standard. The Etherwave Pro features professional-quality response and sound in a package designed both for beauty and portability. Whether you're a seasoned thereminist or someone drawn to its unusual sound and looks, you'll appreciate the quality of response and control this product offers.

Moog theremins are real attention getters on stage -- whether it's a Nine Inch Nails concert or the current Motley Crue concert (Etherwaves have been seen and heard on both tours) -- the audience will be captivated by the instrument that allows the musician to "pull music from the ether."

The Etherwave Pro features removable pitch and volume antennas. The Pitch range of this instrument extends to 6 1/2 octaves. Both Volume and Pitch antenna response are tuned from the wooden pitch and volume knobs as well as the fine adjustment trim controls at the bottom of the front panel.

The front panel controls include a range switch which allows for choosing one of three octave ranges. The Timbre rotary switch is used to select one of the five preset timbres (classic theremin tones) or enables the front panel Waveform, Brightness, and Filter controls, which allow the thereminist to tailor their own personal theremin tone.

The Etherwave Pro also features a headphone output with level control and a dedicated tuner output. A lighted Standby switch allows the Etherwave Pro to be on but silences the audio output.

A line-level audio output is provided, as well as Pitch and Volume Control Voltages, for interfacing the Etherwave Pro with the Minimoog Voyager Synthesizer, or Moogerfooger Analog Effects.

The Etherwave Pro features a power supply that operates with 100 VAC, 50-60 Hz. zZounds is an authorized dealer of Moog Music products.

"Etherwave Pro"

Sound: I have had the pleasure of useing this model theremin for short lengths of time on three occasions. The last time was when Bob and I talked about it shortly befor his passing. Although we disagree on what is the most pleasing sound for a theremin, I can say that he has achieved a sound he believes to be the most musical, he told me that "a pure sine wave is not very musical sounding". He purposely designed it to produce a waveform that includes upper harmonics, therefore voicing it to a violin, or the operatic female voice. The "inductive loading" of the oscillators uses the same method as used in most all his theremins, this gives them a more linear playing distance. This also adds to the usable playing range of of the instrument. Myself I find the it's tone dated compared to tones that can be produced today with new synthesizer equipment. If you are requiring a nice looking well made traditional sounding theremin this is as good as it gets. Sadly as they are no longer made the price for a used one is going through the roof. I have seen them for sale at over $6000. Nice add-on's in order of preference would be, an echo unit, phaser, flanger, reverb. I prefer a small tube amp about 6-12 watts driving a 10 inch RCA alnico speaker mounted in a "open back cab" at head height. A new Moog Etherwave plus hooked up-to a minimoog can do more for less monney than you would have to spend for one of these theremins today. I am confident that as these are a significant part of theremin history that the prices will keep climbing higher. Ease of Use: Easy to use. Like all theremins there very hard to play. Quality: Not as road worthy as the Etherwave, but looks much nicer. Value: Price was high for a theremin to start with. Now they are no longer made they have become very expensive. Manufacturer Support: I have never had an experience to require support. The Wow Factor: It is truly a work of art with the exception of bling knobs. Overall: Sadly this is no longer made.
