Golden Age D-1 Dynamic Vocal Microphone

No longer available at zZounds
Combine the classic style of the 1950s with modern sonic sensitivity in Golden Age's classy all-around mic, designed for vocals yet terrific with instruments.

The D-1 is a classic dynamic microphone inspired by the 1950's style. Most people might think that this kind of mic is designed for live vocal purposes only, but that is not the case with the D-1. The dynamic diaphragm is very sensitive yet rigid and it sounds terrific on electric instruments, toms & snares, and of course vocals.

The D-1 is a workhorse on stage and a spicy all-around mic to keep around the studio or in the rehearsal hangout.

I bought one of these to use as a one mic for a bluegrass band, we actually use two side mics also, but all the vocals use the one mic set up. I have used lots of combos for this over the years, but some structures, concrete outdoor stuff is tough to prevent feedback even with some equing. Anyway I thought what the heck, used today outside in a concrete floored pavillion, not an ounce of feedback. Not quite as sensitive as a LDC and you need to get a little closer but clean vocals with depth. It picked up the mandolin and guitar great, actually sounded much warmer and natural than the beta 57's we had on the dobro and banjo. If you hit the mic stand it will be heard but we had no problem doing 4 part harmony with it. I had the single monitor volume higher than we ever cold with a condenser. I still like condensers on instruments, but was thinking about getting 2 more just to try them on the other instruments. Hope it holds up well.

Musical Background:

Acoustic mostly bluegrass, banjo, dobro, guitar...a long time
