Pick up a Custom Historic SG Standard VOS and you'll be whisked away to the floor of Gibson's original Kalamazoo factory circa 1961. When the first incarnation of the SG rolled off the production line, Gibson envisioned the new model as an improvement to the Les Paul. The SG maintained the solid construction and fat tone while offering easier access to the upper frets and a lighter, thinner body. Fast-forward 50 plus years, and the SG remains an absolute rock classic. With the release of the Gibson Custom Historic SG Standard, Gibson has recreated every detail of the earliest SGs as part of the Vintage Original Spec series.

Vintage Original SG

The Gibson Custom Historic SG Standard VOS has been finely crafted as an authentic replication of the first generation of SG design. The neck is built with 1960 slim-taper profile and attached with a deep set tenon joint for an astounding degree of resonance through the entire guitar. The Custom Historic SG Standard uses a pair of Burstbucker pickups to capture the classic humbucking warmth of the golden era of Gibson solidbody production. Rounded out with a set of vintage tulip-shaped tuners, a holly headstock veneer, and a stunning vintage-style finish, the Gibson Custom Historic SG Standard VOS carries a classic swagger nearly identical to a genuine early '60s SG.

Like all Gibson VOS (Vintage Original Specs) guitars, this SG has undergone an "aging process" for an oxidized finish and all the dings and scratches you would expect read more from a well-worn guitar. VOS series guitars look and feel like a 50-year-old guitar should.

Two Types of Tailpieces

The Gibson Custom Historic SG Standard VOS is available with two distinct tailpiece configurations: a stopbar and a Maestro. The stopbar tailpiece combined with a classic ABR-1 bridge uses components nearly identical to that of a wide range of early Gibson solidbodies. The sturdy design of the ABR-1 was one of the elements that helped create the legendary sustain of '50s-era Les Pauls. The Maestro tailpiece offers a full-fledged tremolo system ideal for wailing solos and wavier chord progressions. Maestro adorned SGs have been favored by SG-enthusiasts such as Angus Young and Wilco's Jeff Tweedy -- both players who elected to include similar tailpieces in their Gibson signature models.

Gibson Custom Shop Historic SG STD VOS

Featuring a thin, two-horned body, the SG Series addressed two of what Ted McCarty saw as the major issues of the now-retired Les Paul body style: weight and limited access to the upper treble register. The new body shape of the SG Standard was dramatically lighter than the old Les Paul, and offered access to the entire fretboard. Now part of Gibson's proprietary new Vintage Original Spec series -- the next step in their journey toward perfection.

Vintage Finish

Aged to perfection, Gibson VOS (Vintage Original Specs) guitars undergo an "aging process" for an oxidized finish and all the dings and scratches you would expect from a well-worn guitar. VOS series guitars look and feel like a 50-year-old guitar should.

I bought a 2013 Les Paul Standard which I absolutely love but when I saw this Custom Shop SG VOS I had to have it. I ordered a "blemished" model from zZounds and neither my guitar shop guy or myself could find the blemish! GREAT VALUE! When my guy Steve from Guitar Shop Santa Cruz saw this guitar he said "This is the best guitar you own" and he was the one who setup my 2013 Les Paul Standard. The Burstbucker 1 and 2 pickups have a warmer soundthan the bright Humbucker Pros in my LP. The neck feels a little beefer than my LP but all and all a great purchase. I am VERY happy with the quality of this guitar. I opted for the stoptail version just because of the negative reviews online with tune issues of the maestro. THANKS YOU ZZOUNDS FOR THIS GREAT PRODUCT!
