Spruce is an overwhelmingly popular tonewood choice for the tops of acoustic-electric guitars. It features an appealing linear grain pattern that's easy on read more the eyes, and it can handle scratches and dings better than other woods can. Sonically, walnut brings in an additional helping of brightness without neglecting the midrange. Overall, it's somewhere between mahogany and rosewood, though not quite as dark-sounding. It all adds up to a solid tonewood combination for the Gibson J-15 acoustic-electric.

Baggs Element Pickup System

The Baggs Element pickup system on your Gibson J-15 delivers a warm and well-balanced sound for the PA or your amplifier. A well-hidden under-saddle transducer holds up well to atmospheric changes, and remains stable and secure if you like to move around a lot while you play. I purchased a blemished model from zZounds. I was worried by not knowing what the specific blemish was but decided to roll the dice. I could not be any happier with my purchase. The blemish came in the form of a grain imperfection on the top. It's a ripple similar to a flame maple grain. It spans the full width of the top from top to bottom (as you hold the guitar in playing position). It only stands out at certain angles and does not diminish the beauty of this guitar in any way. The J-15 has a great sound. The bass and mids are fantastic. As compared to my lower-end Seagull S6, the sound is night and day different. The highs are smooth and not shrill like my Seagull. As others have mentioned, the action is higher than most. I am going to run it this way for a few months. I think I may enjoy it. The laminated maple neck is as straight as an arrow. The walnut sides and back look fantastic. I particularly like the walnut fretboard. I like the feel of it as much as the look of it. I know others have shown concern for the durability of a walnut fretboard vs an ebony version but I seriously doubt that will be an issue even with daily playing. The fit and finish are perfect - blemished grain pattern aside. Gibson quality is evident on every inch of this guitar. I will be playing this one for years to come. I realize this is a review of the guitar but I would like to thank zZounds for their great customer service as well. Not only did it ship out insanely fast, but they answered shipping read more Q's in record time as well. For some reason, my email did not receive their confirmation emails. So, I sent their general customer service email a note stating this. Within minutes, I had the tracking number and order confirmation sent to an alternate address. I am just as pleased with zZounds as I am with this beautiful guitar. I will certainly buy from them again. Please note: my reason for the 3 star "wow factor" rating is because this is a pretty basic model. It has very basic binding and bridge and isn't meant to be a show stopper. It's by no means a complaint.
