What's special about this item?

Feature: What it does:
Gibson '57 Classic humbucking pickups Vintage PAF feel; warmth, depth and distinct edge
AA-grade figured maple body Beautiful, rich wood with a deep grain
Weight-relieved body Lightweight with singing tone
Granadillo fretboard Distinct "bell-like" tone, similar to rosewood

Classic design, modern appointments, timeless tone. The Les Paul Signature "T" honors the legacy of Les Paul by combining 70+ years of Les Paul innovation with modern Gibson refinements. A powerful and versatile tool for today's guitarist, the Signature "T" pairs a mahogany body with a gorgeous, carved AA-grade figured maple top for the ultimate in harmonically rich tone. Capturing the beauty of those tonewoods are a '57 Classic and '57 Classic Plus pickup with smooth, creamy top end and plenty of midrange bite. Traditional Les Paul specs, Gibson USA build quality, and master craftsmanship make this a highly capable guitar, while the SlimTaper neck and traditional weight relief make the "T" a very comfortable guitar to play.

'57 Classic Pickups with Coil-Tapping

The Gibson Signature "T" comes loaded with arguably the most popular Gibson pickups on the market: the '57 Classic and '57 Classic Plus humbuckers. Typically, '57s have chrome cover plates that lend these pickups a traditional look. However, on the Gibson Les Paul Signature "T," the '57 Classic and '57 Classic Plus pickups are mounted open-coil-style, for a hot-rodded and raw look. Designed and built like the famous original P.A.F. humbuckers, these '57s deliver a smooth, crisp high end, with all the juicy midrange you would expect from a modern-classic pickup.

In the bridge position, you'll find the '57 Classic Plus, with an over-wound magnet that increases its output and allows its rich lows and midrange to read more shine. Other refinements include a wax bath to eliminate microphonic feedback and keep your pickup pristine and clean throughout its years of service. The coolest feature by far: You can turn this humbucking pickup into a screaming single-coil with a push of a toggle switch. Coil-tapping makes the Les Paul Signature "T" capable of everything from bluesy saturation to a full-on distortion assault.

Finishes and Tonewoods

One of the highlights of this guitar is the impeccable wood selection. With a carved AA-grade solid maple top beautifully married to the select mahogany back, this Les Paul has no shortage of rich, meaty tone -- and a perfect balance of lows, mids, and highs. Traditional weight relief assures a comfortable playing experience, with just the right amount of wood reduction for the ultimate in playbility and tone. The Signature "T" is rounded off with a set of gold speed knobs, custom stamped "T" truss rod cover, and a traditional gloss lacquer. These high-quality finishes and appointments create a luxurious and comfortable playing experience that make any guitarist look and sound great.

Neck and Fingerboard

Fans of thin, fast necks rejoice! The Les Paul Signature "T" features Gibson's popular '60s-style SlimTaper neck profile, allowing players easy access to chords and scales that are more difficult on larger, baseball-bat-style necks. The mahogany neck is topped with a granadillo fretboard, providing warm, rich tone with an almost "bell-like" quality to the top end. The neck is rounded out with traditional trapezoid inlays and a flatter 12" fretboard radius. More than simply a collector's item, this Les Paul is a highly playable, highly capable tone machine that is rooted in the past, primed for the present, and ready for the future.

Gibson Les Paul Signature T Guitar

The Les Paul Signature T wraps all of Les Paul's legendary innovation into a sweet-looking and great-sounding Les Paul that honors the memory of this legendary guitar's inventor, while providing an instrument primed for the power and versatility demanded by today's gigging guitarist.

For a blend of vintage tone and modern versatility, the Les Paul Signature T is loaded with a pair of Gibson's '57 Classic pickups, mounted open coil for a subtle hot-rod look. Both are made in the image of the hallowed PAF humbucker of the late 1950s, with Alnico II magnets in the neck position for plenty of warmth and clarity, and in the bridge position, the '57 Classic Plus which features slightly over-wound coils for juicy crunch and wailing lead tones. Both pickups are wax potted, too, to avoid microphonic squeal at high volume levels. Both pickups feature push-pull tone controls which provide coil splitting for authentic single-coil tones.

A carved solid Grade-AA figured maple top lends bite and articulation to the sound, while a select mahogany back treated with Gibson's traditional weight relief to increase playing comfort and enhance resonance contributes superb warmth and depth. A solid, quarter-sawn mahogany neck is glued in and carved in the fast '60s SlimTaper profile, and topped with a rich brown Grade-A Granadillo fingerboard with 22 medium-jumbo frets and traditional trapezoid inlays. Traditional touches include cream body and fingerboard binding, pickguard, and pickup rings, along with gold Speed Knobs and a black bell truss-rod cover with commemorative T engraving. Classic Gibson construction ensures optimum playability, too, along with traditional specs like a 24" scale length, a 1 11/16" width across the PLEK-cut Corian nut, and a 12" fingerboard radius for smooth, easy bending. The innovative pairing of a Tune-o-Matic bridge and Stopbar tailpiece ensures solid sustain and precise intonation, while a set of high-quality Grover locking tuners ensures smooth, accurate tuning.

Typical Les Paul with coil splits ..... It feels and sounds right.

Sound
The 57 Classics provide the clear yet warm sound expected from a vintage instrument. The coil splits add an additional aspect of versatility with a very usable thinner/cleaner sound. I find myself doing rhythm with the splits on and switching to the double coils for fills and solos due to the almost perfect gain increase.

Features
The locking tuners are helpful for tuning stability and quicker string changes. The coil splits are a musical and well matched feature. My only complaint would be the nut ... I think it will need some work, but this has been very common on Gibson's over the last decade or so.

Ease of Use
It sounds great plugged straight into a Peavey Classic 50 and responds well to my Digitech RP1000 as well ... so far the only other equipment I have used it with has been a Vox wah pedal and that sounded OK.

Quality
I found zero flaws that I would consider being an issue at all with the exception of the nut (which is very common with Gibsons in general). I will have that resolved when I take it in for a good setup job (I prefer playing 11's so some adjustment is needed). There were no finish issues on mine and the case was also in perfect shape. I have no complaints. It is much better than the '88 Les Paul I got in high school in regards to quality ... Things have certainly read more improved.

Value
All told my bill came out to $1700 and I believe that the price was good for the ebony with the gold hardware.

Manufacturer Support
I have not had to contact Gibson for any support, so I don't have an opinion.

The Wow Factor
I always liked Standards over Customs ... but the gold hardware still appealed to me .... Now I have both without having to buy all new hardware. From a visual standpoint the only thing I don't like is the big T on the truss rod cover, but I replaced it with a blank immediately. Your mileage may vary.

Musical Background:
I have everythig from Gibsons to Fenders ... Jacksons to BC Rich's ... mostly 70's-80's

Musical Style:
70's-80's rock and metal and lately I have been dabbling into country music and bluegrass.
