Product Description

Whether you play blues, rock, jazz, or country, the Custom Shop ES-339 is one guitar that is entirely at home with any or all of it. A pair of Gibsons highly acclaimed 57 Classic humbucking pickups accurately replicate the sound of the legendary PAF humbuckers of the late 50s, with performance updates for todays demanding player. In the neck position, loaded into a guitar with the ES-339s sonic versatility, the 57 Classic provides a range of outstanding voices, from mellow jazz work with outstanding depth and definition, to a singing blues-lead voice with plenty of crispness and cut.

In the bridge, it gives you everything from biting twang to wailing, cutting rock tones with a little overdrive applied. All this, and the ES-339 uses Gibsons Nashville Tone Circuit to immaculately maintain highs as you roll back the volume controls. The classic pairing of a Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece provide solid anchoring and point-perfect adjustment at the body end, while a PLEK-cut Corian nut keeps it all sweet at the end of the neck a hardware complement that works together to optimize resonance and sustain.

As for playability, the ES-339 offers the player a superb neck. The 30/60 profile comes closer to the thin necks of the early 60s, but with an added .030-inches of depth for increased comfort and grip. Top it all off with a choice of thin Antique Red, Antique Vintage Sunburst, or Light Caramel Burst nitrocellulose finishes and throw in a plus-lined Gibson Custom hardshell case, and its an unbeatable instrument, whatever kind of music you make.

Body and Finish

The top, back and sides of the Custom Shop ES-339 are crafted with the same pressed-arch, laminated-maple with solid maple centerblock construction that was used by Gibson to produce the first ES-335s 52 years ago, but the ES-339 is made to more compact dimensions closer to those of Gibson's solidbody electric guitars.

Neck and Headstock

The Custom Shop ES-339's neck and headstock are made in the classic tradition of several great Gibson models, including that of its larger predecessor, the original ES-335. Carved from a single piece of quarter-sawn mahogany and topped with a rosewood fingerboard, the design incorporates Gibson's lauded 17-degree back-angled headstock, which contributes greatly to the instrument's resonance and sustain.

Pickups and Electronics

The Custom Shop ES-339 is equipped with pickups and electronics that accurately reflect the original units of the most desirable ES-335s ever made, but with performance enhancements to benefit today's player. A pair of 57 Classic pickups capture that highly sought-after "PAF" style tone, noted for its unparalleled blend of warmth, richness and clarity, while quality CTS potentiometers-wired with Gibson's Nashville Tone Circuit to maintain highs as you roll down the volume-and a Switchcraft selector and output jack translate the signal in pure vintage style.

Hardware

The ES-339 is equipped with hardware that mirrors the look and performance of its predecessor, the larger ES-335. Particulars include green-button Kluson-style tuners, a Tune-o-matic bridge and stop-bar tailpiece both made from the correct metals and plated in nickel, and Gibson's original aluminum strap buttons, all of which contribute to the timeless look and tone of the instrument.

The Gibson Custom ES-339 is a true original, through the course of more than five decades and myriad shifting musical styles, the ES-335 has remained one of the most popular electric guitars of all time. Its ingenious blend of hollowbody warmth and complexity and solidbody bite and sustain made it arguably the most versatile guitar available when Gibson introduced the model in 1958, and that design imperative hasn't changed today.

For some players more accustomed to the slimmer lines and more compact dimensions of a solidbody electric, though, the standard ES-335 can feel just a little large and unwieldy. Enter the Gibson Custom Shop's ES-339, a guitar built to the design ethos of its predecessor the ES-335, but fashioned to proportions closer to those of the legendary Gibson solidbodies such as the Les Paul and SG. The gently arched top with real f-holes, thinline semi-hollow body, solid maple center block to reduce feedback and enhance sustain, rounded symmetrical cutaways with unparalleled upper-fret access-all here, minus a little of the bulk and weight.

zZounds has verified that this customer bought this product from us. "Amazing Guitar"
Sound: Great tone. I was prepared to hate the pickups. I generally dislike the pickups Gibson puts in their guitars these days. I love the vintage PAF tone and I have Seymour Duncan Limited Edition Joe Bonamassa PAFs in my Les Paul and love them. I thought I would pick up another set to drop into the ES-339. Not necessary. The Classic '57 humbuckers sound really great. I was genuinely surprised. No need to replace them. Feature: The Memphis tone circuit is great, as is the 30/60 neck. Nice and comfortable to play. I also like the the output jack is on the side of the guitar rather than the top. It just looks a lot better. Ease of Use: The guitar needed a proper setup right out of the box. No surprise here. After 30 minute of tweaking I had it set up like a dream. Quality: Gibson guitars usually have some minor flaw or blemish right out of the box. I don't know why that it, but it's usually the case. With mine there is a little bubble in the binding around the body. Nothing big and frankly I had to really search for it, but it's there. Gibson's quality control has left something to be desired for a long time. I guess I have learned to accept it. Mind you, it's not worth returning a guitar over something this minor, but for this price there shouldn't be any defects. I justify it by telling myself that it gives the guitar character. There are plenty of Gibson haters out there that point to stuff like this as validation that Gibson makes a lousy product. Here's my take: Gibsons tend to have minor defects in them. VERY minor things, but they're there. The tone is just so sweet that we're willing to look past it. Value: Meh. The guitar costs more than it probably should, but so do all Gibsons. Can you get a great guitar for less? Probably, but they never seem to have a soul the way Gibsons do. That's why I keep buying them. There's something intangible that I can't quite put my finger on. But it's real and it's there. Manufacturer Support: No experience dealing with them. The Wow Factor: Looks great, plays great and it even smells great. I love it. It has a soul and it wants to be played. Overall: I bought this guitar on a whim having never actually played one. I own a Les Paul and I pick up an ES-335 just about every time I walk into a music store, so I had an idea of what to expect. I can honestly say my expectations were exceeded.I love my Les Paul. The tone is sweet and singing but it also growls when I want it to. Problem is, it's way too heavy. I can't play it for long periods of time because it hurts my back and shoulder. Even when playing it while seated hurts because it digs into my leg.The ES 335 on the other hand also has great tone but is too big and bulky for me. I just find a large guitar uncomfortable.Enter the ES-339. Calling it a hybrid between a Les Paul and a 335 is spot-on. It has a nice woody tone like a 335 but it can also growl like a Les Paul. Size-wise it's just about the size of a Les Paul. Maybe a tiny bit bigger. Certainly a bit thicker, but this is a semi-hollow after all. It's nice and light and it feels very similar to the LP.The Memphis tone circuit works as advertised. The highs stay when you roll off the volume. Very nice. I thought it would be gimmicky but it's actually quite useful. Oh, and it's a beautiful guitar to look at. I got the antique vintage sunburst and I can tell you that photos don't do it justice. Gibson got it right with this one!

"Sweet Gibson"
Overall: Love the way it plays, looks and sounds. So versatile but really can rock too. A tad larger than a Les Paul, it is comfortable to play. I have the fat '59 neck which I like a lot.
