Conceived by car designer Ray Dietrich, the Firebird has long been the go to guitar for adventurous players who wanted a guitar design unlike any other. Now Gibson USA introduces the 50th Anniversary Firebird with a gold-on-gold tribute to the revolutionary original. Crafted with the features that made the original Firebird unique, the Gibson Limited Edition 50th Anniversary Firebird offers through-neck construction, versatile contemporary Firebird mini-humbucking pickups, reversed six-a-side headstock with Steinberger's gearless tuners and a Bullion Gold nitrocellulose finish with complementing gold hardware.

Every great electric guitar begins with its tonewoods, and the 50th Anniversary Firebird is no exception. Like the original 1963 Firebird, this tribute is based on the complicated through-neck design that includes a multi-piece mahogany neck and body-center section with solid mahogany wings, all resulting in superb resonance and sustain.

The iconic reverse-bodied styling was named for its approximation of a more conventional offset double-cutaway guitar flipped front to back. The neck is carved in the slim and super-fast Firebird profile, and measures .800 inch at the 1st fret and .850 inch at the 12th. A genuine Grade-A rosewood fingerboard carries 22 medium-jumbo frets and traditional trapezoid inlays, and is topped with a PLEK-cut Corian nut.

To kick it all up a notch in the tonal stakes Gibson USA equips the 50th Anniversary Firebird with its breed of re-engineered read more Firebird Mini Humbucking pickups. Loaded with ceramic magnets and wound with 44 AWG wire in the neck position and 45 AWG wire in the hotter bridge position, these dual-blade humbuckers achieve classic Firebird tone with added punch and clarity.

A set of high-tech Steinberger gearless in-line tuners offer unparalleled efficiency while retaining the traditional "no keys" look that preserves the elegant "bird's beak" lines of the headstock. The pairing of a Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece offers rock-solid sustain and precise intonation, and with all hardware plated in genuine gold, it's the perfect look for a 50th Anniversary celebration.

Each guitar includes a black Gibson hardshell case and owner's manual, and is covered by Gibson's Limited Lifetime Warranty and 24/7/365 Customer Service. Grab your 50th Anniversary Firebird while you still can, and help celebrate five decades of a true revolutionary.

This guitar feels like all neck at first. I thought it was a longer scale than my other Gibsons, but it is not. After you get used to how it feels on, the fun begins. Many people complain about the stock ceramic pickups, but I love them! I play dirty Zep/Hendrix/Sabbath style original rock and this guitar sounds amazing and unique through cranked tube amps! Sounds like a mix between HB and single coils, but still has its own sound as well. I took it on a 10 date tour and beat the heck out of it, it held up perfectly despite me covering it with blood and sweat and slamming the headstock into cymbals multiple times. The Steinberger tuning system takes a minute to get used to, but is a breeze to use once you figure it out and stays in tune perfectly. Make sure to keep a tiny allen on hand though as a couple of the tuning knobs came off, which makes it impossible to tune unless you get them reattached. I think they were loose from the factory because I have not had any issues since I tightened them myself. Check out these videos if you want to hear it in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IIVnSzQ2OE and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vtQES_jyNg. i can't wait to get a second firebird :)
