Experience the Comfort and Cool Look of a Road Worn Strat!

At one point or another in each of our guitar playing careers, something happens. We see a guitar player who blows us away, and we think, "Wow, I want to sound like that. I just have to have that guitar!" When you think about the truly great guitarists of our time, such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Eric Johnson, Jimmy Page, Joe Perry, and on down the line, it's very rare that they're holding a pristine, factory-fresh instrument. Their guitars are beat-up, worn-in, and simply scream with mojo. As a guitarist seeking that look, you're presented with two options: either you pony up the exorbitant amounts vintage guitars are currently fetching, or you look for a modern guitar that features all of the tone and well-played mojo you're looking for at a price that won't break the bank. Enter the Fender Road Worn Series.

Vintage Features in a Modern Package

It makes sense that players have been begging for modern versions of 60s Strats--it's hard to argue the fact that the Strat really came into it's own in that decade. Available in period-correct 3-Color Sunburst and Olympic White finishes, the Fender Road Worn 60s Stratocaster features an Alder body topped with a typically top-shelf Nitrocellulose lacquer finish, guaranteed to combine for the best in tone and vintage looks. We'd be remiss if we glossed over how special these Road Worn finishes actually are (pun very much intended) so let's explore them a little more deeply. Using the same "relic-ing" techniques pioneered in their Custom Shop, Fender has refined the process down to a science, meaning each production model guitar will feature a professionally well-worn finish, just like those vintage axes you covet. While they might not look exactly the same as one another, every Road Worn finish recreates the areas of distress typically associated with a guitar that has been gigged night in and night out for many years.

This guitar is all about the combination of the best of old and new, and the neck on this Strat leans toward the vintage, thanks to its C shape, 21 frets and 7.25-inch fingerboard radius. Also on the vintage side you'll find a vintage-style synchronized tremolo -- actually a vibrato, but who are we to argue with Leo Fender and his 50-some-odd years of mis-nomenclature? -- vintage style tuners, 3-ply Mint Green pickguard, aged knobs, pickup covers, and a switch tip.

Modern Touches for the Modern Player

Some of the more modern touches you'll find on this guitar include its array of 3 parchment-covered Tex-Mex Strat pickups, combined with a 5-position selector switch for nailing all of those famous Strat "in-between" sounds, along with a master volume and two tone controls. This guitar also features the more modern 6105 Narrow Jumbo frets, for the best of both speed and playability. Another new feature you aren't going to find on just any old Strat is the synthetic bone nut built into the fretboard of this player, stabilizing tuning while preventing string breakage and translating string vibration for unparalleled resonance and clarity. Finally, this guitar ships strung up with the modern Fender standard tension nickel plated steel strings, and also includes the Deluxe Fender gig bag for safe, easy transport to and from the gig.

Fender Road Worn '60s Stratocaster

Like classic cars or your favorite T-shirt, some things just get cooler with age. It's especially true of electric guitars--they develop an unmistakable mojo over time that only makes 'em look even cooler and feel even more comfortable than when they were first bought. That said, Fender's Road Worn '60s Strat guitar delivers that killer aged look, feel and mojo without breaking the bank; designed using 1960s specs augmented by Tex-Mex pickups and 6105 frets. A true player.

The Stratocaster really came into its own in the 1960s, with players coaxing unbelievable sounds from it amid punishing stage shows and grueling tours. Beaten, bruised and even burned, they only got better as the years wore on--looking even cooler and feeling even more comfortable. Fender's rosewood-fretboard Road Worn '60s Strat delivers that aged look and feel--built to look, sound and feel like it's got more than just a few miles on it, designed with 1960s specs, including a nitrocellulose-lacquer finish, and supercharged with Tex-Mex(TM) pickups and 6105 frets.

zZounds has verified that this customer bought this product from us. "I love my 60s Road Worn Strat!"
Sound: This Strat is a very good product and I am proud to own it. My "Hats Off" to the folks in Mexico that produced it. It sounds great with my Marshall amp. I rate the sound as a "9" due to the single wound pick-ups but I will probably upgrade it to a set of Kinman no-hum pick-ups. Feature: It came wth a "gig bag" soft case of decent quality but the money I saved on the Strat Zounds allowed me to upgrade to a nice hard case. Thank you zZounds! Ease of Use: I get all of the sound that I would expect from a Strat. Biting highs to hard thumping lows. Quality: Excellent Quality. Value: Good product. Good price. Great value. Manufacturer Support: No probs. If I did, I'm sure that Fender backs up their products with a good warranty. The Wow Factor: It's babe-alicious. Overall: I expect to own and play this guitar forever. I have always wanted a Strat and love the looks and sounds that come from the "road worn series". I would definitely buy another one if something happened to it.

zZounds has verified that this customer bought this product from us. "Great guitar, good value..."
Sound: The sound, both acoustically and when plugged into an amp are excellent for this guitar. The light nitrocellulose lacquer finish really allows the instrument to resonate in way that is lacking on the polyurethane finished strats. I use this strat specifically for playing the blues. At home or in the studio I play it through a 1967 Fender Super Reverb with a homemade TS808. On stage I run it through a Fender Deluxe VM, and mic that out to the PA. Some minor adjustments to the Tex-Mex pickups height paid dividends in terms of a more focused sound in each of the available positions. Feature: The guitar included a gig bag, a tremolo bar, and few other miscellaneous items. At the current price point, I would of course prefer that the guitar came with a hard shell case. Ease of Use: Strats are very easy to use, and use of a manual is obviously not required. As with any guitar, finding one that plays well is key - modifications such as different pickups, pots and even wiring are typical with any guitar. I do however like the way this guitar sounds as is. Quality: I am impressed with the build quality of the 60's road worn series. Out of the box the guitar was set up decently. The fret edges however were very jagged requiring about an hour of filing on my part. If you're not comfortable with this type of work it might cost you $45-$70 to have the work done for you. I should add that I bought the guitar and had it shipped to the northern US during a very cold spell in February. Wood shrinks, and so I don't necessarily blame the vendor for sending out a guitar with obvious issues. Value: I think it is worth the price. The old argument that you should never pay this much for a mexican guitar is ridiculous. The craftsmanship is in my opinion right on par with the American strats. Manufacturer Support: I have never dealt with Fender before, although I have owned many fender products over the years, including about a half dozen stratocasters. I cannot comment on their customer service. The Wow Factor: Sex Appeal? Naw, this guitar has practical application for stage and recording work. Overall: Overall, this is a great guitar for the money. It feels pre-worn, almost pre-loved, and I have already bonded with it. My Les Pauls are jealous. If it were stolen, I'd but another. It will play a considerable role in both live and studio situations, and for the money I don't think there's much out there that compares. Remember, all guitars generally need a user-specific set-up, and this one is no different.
