7.25-inch fretboard radius Very rounded, vintage feel
Pearl block fretboard inlays Aesthetically cool neck inlays
Contoured heel Rounded heel for easy access to high frets

Marcus Miller has made a name for himself as a top bass player by backing up luminaries like Miles Davis and Luther Vandross, as well as leading a bright solo career. It's no surprise then, that Fender has developed the 5-string Marcus Miller Jazz Bass as an instrument primed for any stage.

Gig-Ready Sound and Feel

Sporting a relatively light five-string ash body, the Marcus Miller Jazz Bass is made to give players a comfortable low-end experience. The one-piece maple neck is sculpted with a 7.25" radius, making for a slimmed-down profile that enables players to cover plenty of fretboard territory. The neck is topped by a 20-fret maple fretboard and is reinforced with Posiflex graphite support rods for improved stability.

Electronics That Pop

With the ability to switch between active and passive circuitry, this Jazz Bass is clearly designed to cover all the ground a bassist like Marcus Miller requires. Players can instantly toggle between warm passive sounds and sharp, well-defined active sounds depending on their stage or studio needs. The bass is loaded with an American Vintage single-coil Jazz Bass pickup in the bridge position and an American Vintage '75 single-coil Jazz Bass pickup in the bridge. Controls include two master volume and active bass and treble boost/cut knobs.

Built to Stand Out

Marcus Miller is not a bassist content to stay hidden in a band's backline -- and anyone playing his signature bass won't be able to hide, either. With its unique read more black pickguard shape and maple fretboard with white block inlays, it's immediately clear this is a bass like no other.

Fender Marcus Miller Jazz V Bass

Marcus Miller's combination of soulful groove and astounding technical ability has made him one of the jazz world's preeminent virtuoso bassists. Fender's stylish five-string Marcus Miller Jazz Bass V guitar is soulful and astounding, too. It has an ash body, distinctive black pickguard/control plate, one-piece C-shaped maple neck, 7.25-radius maple fingerboard with white binding and white pearl block inlays, Posiflex graphite neck support rods, and satin finish (gloss finish on the headstock, plus Miller's signature).

Great tone comes from a pair of custom vintage-style Fender Jazz Bass single-coil pickups and an 18-volt active preamp; the two-band active EQ has an active/passive mini-toggle switch. Other features include a chrome neck pickup cover, knurled chrome dome knobs on the volume controls and black Jazz Bass knobs on the tone controls, contoured heel and asymmetrical five-bolt neck plate.

Being able to choose the one I wanted from the stock they share with other retailers was pretty slick. I personally feel the MM signature bass looks best in sunburst- helps the pick guard blend in to the body. My bass weighed in at 8 lbs 4 ozs, nice and lite. I chose my bass as best I could for best all around axe, based on superficial specs (it's mail order); neck specs, weight, wood grain, color quality etc.. Thank God the build quality and sound were as good as they were, especially the solid build on this beast. Who likes to return stuff. I'm not into the MM sound, but love this bass, so I did change the strings to thicker La Bella flat wounds and will change the pickups to something with more of a 60s sound, but this bass provides the perfect canvas for tweaking. This bass is geared for slapping, so the clarity does shine through. I know some people change the preamp, but I think I'm satisfied with it so far, we'll see. I usually stay away from signature equipment, but I dig this one for sure. When buying equipment, know what you like then go for it...
