Rather than dampening your snare's sound, the Evans EC Reversed Dot head's edge treatment gets rid of unwanted overtones and adds more focus.
Overview
EC Snare heads combine 2-plies of film (6.5mil external, 10mil internal) with Evan's "Edge Control" technology to produce a controlled sound while retaining resonance and sensitivity at all tuning and dynamic ranges. The addition of a specially designed patch on the Reverse Dot model lends extra durability, focus, and attack in the center.

"Depends on the drum"

Put this on my 6" X 14" inherently noisy steel snare drum thinking it would help the tone and noise - WRONG! However, when I put this head on my 5" X 14" wooden shell snare, I was AMAZED at how it sings! Absolutely the PERFECT HEAD for THAT DRUM!!!
