Channelling a 50 year legacy of definitive rock sound, the Epiphone 50th Anniversary 1961 SG Special Outfit is a serious axe that is seriously affordable. Sporting a pair of classic P-90s for versatile tone with vintage flavor, the 1961 SG Special Outfit harkens back to the classic days of the SG glory. With a 1961 SG Special Outfit in hand, it's easy to understand why rock legends from Angus to Zappa have long embraced the SG as their weapon of choice.

Classic SG with Modern Benefits

The design and construction of the 1961 SG Special Outfit builds on a classic SG foundation with series of modern enhancements. It features a mahogany neck with a rosewood fingerboard and SlimTaper(tm) 1960's D-Profile for extreme comfort and playability. The Alnico P-90R pickup at the neck and P-90T at the bridge provide an excellent cross section of double-coil depth with single-coil sheen. In the earliest days of the SG, P-90s were often chosen for the added versatility when used on a solid body. With four attractive colors and vintage ivory-style tuners, the 1961 SG Special Outfit has a stylish look to compliment its classic tone.

Jimmy Jackson shows off the classic rock vibe of the 1961 SG Special Outfit.

Features:

- Vintage inspired SG with modern appointments
- Alnico P-90R neck and P-90T bridge pickups for double-coil tone with single-coil benefits.

- Adjustable stopbar allows easy adjustments to inntonation

Like all SGs produced since the model was introduced in 1961, the Epiphone 1961 SG Special Outfit blazes with sweet tone and rock n' roll fury. The P-90 pickups and vintage vibe complete this SG.

Product Description

Celebrating 50 Years of a Classic! The Epiphone Limited Edition 50th Anniversary 1961 SG Special Outfit faithfully turns back the clock and gives you an affordable iconic instrument that sounds and plays like you've stepped back in time. The original SG not only rivaled guitars of its own era for sonic variety, but also proved to be a sign of things to come.

Hard rock, metal, and scores of rockers embraced the original SG. Today, it's a part of every guitar player's arsenal and The Epiphone Limited Edition 50th Anniversary 1961 SG Special Outfit gives you classic styling and vintage sound with the famous Epiphone production quality that today's guitar collectors seldom find in vintage instruments.

The Gibson SG Story

When the SG or Solid Guitar was introduced in 1961 as a replacement for the Les Paul, it was called the "fretless wonder" for its low frets and fast action. The twin horn cutaway design was like nothing on the market and its light but balanced weight and P90 pickups made it the perfect guitar for stage and studio. Not only was it lighter than a Les Paul but the SG's P90 pickups had more tone and clarity than single coil pickups yet still had all the bite and overtones of a humbucker.

Some of the SG's biggest fans include The Who's Pete Townsend, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi, Paul Weller, AC/DC's Angus Young, Frank Zappa, Derek Trucks of the Allman Brothers Band, and Les Paul himself.

Classic Vintage Styling and Unique Features

Like the original, the Epiphone Limited Edition 50th Anniversary 1961 SG Special Outfit features a Mahogany body and Mahogany neck with a SlimTaperTM 1960's D-Profile. And like vintage SGs, the Epiphone 1961 SG Special Outfit has a handset 24.75 inch neck with a 12 inch radius, a Rosewood fingerboard, a 1.68 inch nut width for tuning stability during bends, Wilkinson Vintage 14:1 Ivory Button machine heads, and a classic 60's era Epiphone logo on the headstock.

Original Premium Electronics

No detail of the Epiphone 1961 SG Special Outfit has been missed. The Alnico P90R Soapbar neck pickup and the Alnico P90T Soapbar bridge pickup are perfect for players who want elements of both single and double coil sounds in one pickup. P90s were preferred by early electric jazz guitarists for their horn-like tone on archtop guitars.

But P90s really shine in solidbody guitars and the mix of mahogany and Alnico P90s gives the Epiphone 1961 SG Special Outfit a unique sound that is both modern and classic. The vintage style black controls with metal inserts include Neck Volume and Tone and Bridge Volume and Tone, allowing for an infinite variety of tone combinations.

The all metal 3-way toggle switch is designed by Epiphone, and the Wrap-Around Lightning Bar Combination Stopbar Adjustable bridge provides tuning and intonation stability.

zZounds has verified that this customer bought this product from us. "Great Budget Guitar"
Sound: Crystal clear cleans, similar to a Strat, but a bit darker. Very smooth and creamy overdrive and distortion. It can do high gain, but gets a bit noisy. Feature: The wraparound bridge adds to the vintage look, but I prefer having more control. I wasn't sure what to make of the ivory "button" tuners, but they have worked well. It came with a nice gig bag, but that's now in the closet with the rest of the complimentary gig bags I've gotten over the years. Quality: When you bought an Epiphone 20 years ago, you expected to find at least one defect, if not more. A knob that didn't work, frets wiggling around, a flaw in the finish. I've bought 5 Ephiphones in the last 2 or 3 years, and have not found a single defect. Value: I kind of feel guilty for only paying what I did. I almost feel like I owe Epiphone some money. I'm not going to give them any, though. The Wow Factor: The look of this guitar with the TV Yellow finish is what sold me on it. It has a very vintage look and it reminds me of my childhood in the 70s. The fact that it sounds and plays well was a bonus. Overall: I love guitars. I have a lot of them, and I always want more. Unfortunately, I can't afford a room full of $1000+ guitars. So, when I saw this guitar (in TV Yellow), for this price, I had to have it. I don't expect much from $400 guitars, but this one surprised me. I knew P90s in an SG would sound good, but what I didn't expect was a very comfortable neck, decent tuning stability, and so much tone control. Not to mention a flawless finish. Epiphone has certainly come a long way since the ones I bought in the late 80s.

Sound: Great sound! Creamy, but with bite.Harmonics, great sustain. Feature: 2 tone,2 volume. The wrap around bridge gives the guitar a clean look. The white finish just looks plain cool. Ease of Use: The neck is fast.Plays like butter. Quality: The fit,& finish are all real good. There are no sharp edges,or any quality issues. Value: This guitar is definitely worth the price. It has the tone& playability of a Les Paul without the weight problem. Manufacturer Support: No problems with the guitar,so no contact with Epiphone. The Wow Factor: The real appeal of this guitar is the simplicity.A reproduction of the first SG's.True to its roots. Overall: I'm really a Strat guy,but I love the way this thing plays. The tone has a wide range.Clean to all out crunch.Another thing that really impresses me is that the guitar is so light. You can play all day without any strain on your shoulder.
