Epiphone Thunderbird Classic IV PRO

A rock classic returns with Gibson USA TB Plus humbuckers with ceramic magnets! The Epiphone Thunderbird Classic IV PRO Electric Bass Guitar takes all the vintage mojo of the original Thunderbird IV and sends it flying into the future with Gibson TB Plus humbuckers and all the original styling intact. The sound of the original Thunderbird IV was as cutting edge as its design and now the Thunderbird Classic IV PRO gives you that same great vibe and tone!

Timeless Thunderbird Design

The Epiphone Thunderbird Classic IV PRO bass features mahogany body wings and a rock-solid, 7-piece mahogany/walnut neck with through-body construction for amazing sustain and articulate tone. The Classic IV PRO's neck has a 1960s style rounded profile, which makes it easy to play without sacrificing the tone that comes with a full-size bass neck.

The mahogany/walnut neck has a 34 inch scale length with a rosewood fingerboard, a 12 inch radius, 20 medium-jumbo nickel/silver alloy frets, a 1.50 inch nut, and pearloid dot inlays. The iconic reverse headstock is one of the Thunderbird Classic IV PRO's most outstanding visual features with a trim that matches the color finish around a black headstock. The truss rod cover also features 'Epiphone' in gold typeface.

The Power of the Thunderbird

The Epiphone Thunderbird Classic IV PRO features Gibson TB Plus humbuckers with ceramic magnets. Ceramic magnets are a perfect choice for the classic Thunderbird sound for their high gain, smooth tone and high-end definition. The Gibson TB Plus humbuckers are traditional hum-cancelling bass pickups that are wax potted and then filled with epoxy, producing a full frequency, heavy-bottom sound similar to pickups with a passive EQ.

These pickups deliver the huge, powerful bass tone the Thunderbird IV is renowned for. The Black TopHat controls come with chrome metal inserts and feature Epiphone-standard 1 inch diameter potentiometers for better throw, longer life and reliable service. Controls include neck volume, bridge volume, master tone, and neck pickup tone.

Rock Solid Epiphone Hardware

Epiphone hardware is the envy of the industry and the Thunderbird Classic IV PRO bass guitar features premium die-cast 14:1 bass machine heads and an Epiphone 3-point adjustable bridge, much like the original design but made even more reliable. The 3-point adjustable bridge gives players the ability to fine-tune the height of the Thunderbird Classic-IV PRO's bass strings in all directions -- front, back, and side-to-side -- giving the bridge a floating profile and allowing the bass to be equipped with a variety of string gauges and multiple set-up options.

The Epiphone Thunderbird Classic IV PRO's legendary resonance, tone, and sustain is the result of anchoring the bridge directly into the body at its three adjustable points, which provides a firm seating for the strings and yields a strong union between the strings and body. Readily accessible screws make setting the intonation simple and unproblematic. And of course, the white pickguard features the iconic Thunderbird logo.

Where to start? First off the TB looks killer. I ordered the vintage sunburst model and it's a real beauty. The finish was excellent and if maintained properly will stay that way a LONG time. The first complaint you usually hear from T-Bird naysayers is that it has horrible neck dive, well I can tell you from first hand experience the neck dive is non-existent. Older T-Bird's had the front strap button on the top horn of the guitar and that caused a good amount of the neck dive. In This model it was moved to the back of the neck and allows for comfortable and balanced played for extended amounts of time. The guitar sounds exactly how you'd expect a T-Bird to sound, like a rumbling thunder head when you play lows and a lightning crack when you slap and pop. The three knob design works just fine for delivered a plethora of tones. The T-Bird has sustain for days, partly due to the neck through design I'm sure. You can feel the low notes rumble through the body of the guitar; it's really something else. Overall Epiphone REALLY set the bar. Sleek and sexy T-Bird design AND sound (Thanks to actual Gibson TB Plus Humbuckers) at the perfect price. Everyone that's seen the guitar have expected a price tag of upwards of $800. They can't believe it's a $500 axe. If you're on the fence like I was (I didn't know if the extra $200 was really worth the difference between the base model and the Pro Classic model) I can tell you I'm 100% satisfied with my purchase. For an extra $200 you get a read more ton of bang for your buck. One thing to note is that the bottom of the guitar is slanted so it doesn't sit flush in a stand that doesn't support the guitar neck. I don't consider this a con at all, just a little helpful info for storing your new T-Bird from one player to another.
