Crate PX700DLX 7-Channel Powered Mixer

(2) 200-watt power amps can be bridged at 400 watts.

Our 30-Day 100% Satisfaction Guarantee applies on this item. Buy it, and if it isn't just right for you, return it!
Description
The PX700DLX features 7 XLR inputs and 1/4 in. high impedance inputs on the first 4 channels. Channels 5, 6, and 7 have 2 line inputs each for use with stereo devices such as CD players, tape decks, or keyboards. Each channel also features Gain, Master Level, Effect, and Monitor send as well as 3 bands of EQ. The Master section has multiple effects controls, extensive patch bay, effect selector buttons, dual graphic EQ's 48V phantom power, power amp selector, dual level controls, LED ladders, and power amp assignment switch. The PX700DLX has (2) 200-watt RMS power amps on board, which can be bridged at 400 watts.

Graphic EQ's
These 7-band graphic equalizers allow customization and shaping of the output signals to match room acoustics and enhance the sound. Use the selector switch to determine where the equalization will be applied: either to the main and monitor output signals, or to the main 1 and main 2 output signals.

LED Meters/Limiter Indicators
These LED meters monitor the output signal levels for either the main and monitor output signals, or the main 1 and main 2 output signals (dependent on the setting of the selector switch). The red LED's illuminate when the internal limiter is engaged to prevent the signal from being clipped (clipping results in overdrive distortion and should be avoided). If the limiter LED's flash continuously or remain on constantly during use, reduce the output signal levels until they flash only on strong signal peaks.

Effects Returns
Use these controls to adjust the magnitude of the effects applied to the output signals. Use the selector switch to determine where the effects will be applied: either to the main and monitor output signals, or to the main 1 and main 2 output signals.

Main/Monitor/Main1/Main 2
Use this switch to select whether the graphic EQ's, LED meters, and master level controls are assigned to the Main and Monitor outputs (switch in the out position) or to the Main 1 and Main 2 outputs (switch depressed. When this switch is in the out position, the Main/Main 1 graphic EQ controls the signal to power amp #1, the output of which is connected to the Main Output jack. Also, the Monitor/Main 2 graphic EQ controls the signal to power amp, the output of which is connected to the Monitor Output jack. When this switch is depressed, the Main/Main 1 graphic EQ controls the signal to power amp #1, the output of which is connected to the Main 1 Speaker Output jacks. Also, the Monitor/Main 2 graphic EQ controls the signal to power amp #2, the output of which is connected to the Main 2 Speaker Output jacks.

Effects Send
Use this control to set the overall signal level sent to the internal DSP or external effects (if used).

Aux In
Use this control to set the input signal level of the aux in jack.

Tape In
Use this control to set the input signal level of the tape in jacks.

Power LED
This LED illuminates when the mixer is on.

Phantom +48V
This switch, when depressed, applies +48 volts DC to pins 2 and 3 of each channel's XLR input jacks. This allows use of microphones that require a source of phantom power for proper operation (mics not requiring phantom power will not be affected by the presence of the DC voltage). The adjacent LED illuminates when the phantom power is on.

DSP Selectors
Use these switches to select the type of digital signal processing effect to be applied - vocal, large hall, and small hall are reverberation effects; delay is a digital delay effect.

DSP On
Use this switch to activate the internal digital signal processor. When this switch is depressed, the selected DSP effect is activated.

Effects Send
Use this jack to send a signal to an external effects device. The signal level at this jack is set by the effects send control.

Footswitch
Use this jack to connect a footswitch for remote on/off control of the DSP and external effects device. The footswitch must be a normally open, momentary type such as the Crate model #FSIU. The wiring for the footswitch is as shown:

Aux In
Use this jack as the return jack when using an external effects device, or to feed another mixer's signal into the PX700DLX/PX900DLX. This jack is post-input channel, pre-EQ, and pre-power amp.

Tape In
Use these jacks to connect the outputs of a tape deck or CD player to the mixer. The playback signal level is set by the tape in level control.

Tape Out
Use these jacks to connect the mixer to a tape recorder. These jacks are is post-EQ, pre-master, and their signal level is determined by the channel level controls.

Monitor Out
Use this jack to send a line level, monitor mix signal to the power amplifier you are using for your monitor speakers.

Main Out
Use this jack to send a line level, main mix signal to an external power amplifier (if used), a recording console, or to the aux in jack of another PX700DLX/PX900DLX.

Power Amp Switch
Use this switch to set the amplifier for mono bridged operation (switch to the left) or for main/monitor operation (switch to the right).

Main 1/Main 2 Speakers
Use these jacks to connect the mixer to your PA speakers, only when the power amp switch is set to the main/monitor position. Observe the 4-ohm minimum load rating and all other speaker information printed on the rear of the mixer.

Bridge Speaker
Use this jack to connect the mixer to your PA speakers, only when the power amp switch is set to the bridge position. Observe the 8-ohm minimum load rating and all other speaker information printed on the rear of the mixer.

AC Line Cord
Connect this cord to a suitable source of AC power, as indicated to the right of the cable. Do not attempt to bypass the ground connection of this power cable!

Power Switch
Use this switch to apply AC voltage to the mixer. The mixer is on when the switch is depressed, off when the switch is in the out position.

Crate PX700DLX 7-Channel Powered Mixer Reviews

18 People rated this product :

"A solid, compact, and lightweight PA. Sounds good too."
Feature:
This thing is loaded with useful features. The digital reverbs are good, but the delay is not that useful since you can't adjust the repeat rate. Plenty of ins & outs and about everything you could reasonably expect in a compact powered mixer. There are a couple of things I would have liked to have seen Crate's engineers include, though. The EQ is 7-bands per channel with the lowest frequency at 125 Hz., and the highest at 8K. Another band at 50 or 60 Hz. on the low end and one around 14K would've been a nice addition. But, it's a pretty crowded panel as it is. Another thing that they really should have included is AC cord wrap hooks on the back. The AC cord is permanently attached and just hangs off. Of course that doesn't affect the sound quality, and you can add hooks later (as I did) if you're handy.

Quality:
Build quality is typical of today's PA heads of this type. Rugged plywood box with carpet covering, and sturdy metal faceplate and rear panel. One thing I'm not fond of are the pots. They work smooth and are silent, but the control shafts are plastic. PA gear is made for the road, and needs the ability to stand up to some abuse. The pots look like they could snap if something banged against them. Most box-mixers today have plastic pots though, so I'm not picking on Crate. An easy solution is to cut a piece of plywood the size of the front of the mixer with the hook-side of velcro around the perimeter. It'll stick to the carpet on the mixer, and you'll have a front panel cover to protect the controls while in transit. Voila! It also won't give you a hernia, which is nice.

Value:
I bought mine used at an unbelievable price. I would be very reluctant to pay the $579 MSRP for it, but then again, you never pay retail for these things. It's a good product, and it's definately worth checking out if you're looking for a PA for smaller clubs, practice, or if you're on a limited budget. It's a comparable unit to similar powered mixers from Peavey and Carvin, but don't expect it to be a Yorkville or Mackie. But it doesn't cost a thousand bucks either.

Desirability:
It's as sexy as any other box mixer. Which is to say... not that sexy.

Sound:
Sounds as good as most other "box-mixers". Pretty good, but not on par with a larger system with a high-quality mixer, separate power amps and dedicated fx units. Should be plenty loud enough for gigging in smaller clubs. (Rated at 200 Watts RMS per channel at 4 ohms, 125 per channel at 8 ohms.) Mine's pretty quiet, too. Use efficient speakers with it and you should be happy. Just don't expect it to handle live and loud kick drums, or bass guitar.

Support:
I haven't dealt with Crate support for many years. The one time I needed to, many years ago for a guitar amp, they were excellent. My guitar amp is around 18 years old and still plugging away.

Overall:
I bought this to use for smaller gigs, and as an all-purpose go-anywhere PA. I hate setting up vast amounts of PA gear, so if I can get by without hooking up my big rack rig, I'm a happy camper. As I mentioned, it does the job pretty well. So, I'm planning on keeping it 'til it goes to that big electronic junkyard in the sky.

"Good basic system with separate monitor and mains"
This is a good basic system for sound
reinforcement of electric piano and vocals.
The box is solid and the internal power supply
has plenty of headroom for peaks. The
heatsinks are good enough for convention
cooling for live jazz and folk .

The three equalizers per channel are good
for electric piano and vocals. The separate
seven band main and monitors equalizers allow
you to balance the speakers. The unit drives
four 8 ohm speakers with no problems

The main amps self noise is obvious when the
main volumes and/or channel gains are past
75%. I use Audio Tech ATM41HE high output mics
to keep the mixer levels down.

The speaker 1/4" jacks are not the tightest

The internal DSP reverb is OK for vocals
