Carl Martin Opto Envelope Auto-Wah Filter Pedal

No longer available at zZounds
The Carl Martin Opto Envelope pedal gives you a huge range of auto-wah sounds without the bulk of an expression pedal in your rig.

Carl got a call from an old guitar playing friend who said he didn't want to use his wah all the time, but wanted to have some of those effects available. Enter the Classic Optical Envelope... essentially a classic envelope filter (auto-wah utilizing the same opto-technology as the Opto-compressor) for guitar or bass, with a bunch of cool options. The first footswitch is for fx on/off (buffered), and the second to select between the three modes (High Pass, Band Pass and Low Pass). Add to this the Level control for overall volume, Drive for how hard the auto-wah will function, Q for adjusting the size of the bandwidth, and Tone which acts as a separate Hi-pass filter, and you have complete control over your fx...from vocal like tones to funky quacks and fat wows! Housed in a cool diecast housing with mini-knobs and cool retro color, the Classic Optical Envelope can be powered by a 9v battery, but we always recommend a regulated power supply for optimum response!

After hearing the solo to John Mayer's Wildfire I thought an auto wah/envelope filter would be a good addition to my board. After some research and YouTube reviews I found the Carl Martin. I found it to be a handsome pedal and looked to have a good amount of features without being too finicky or complicated. The pedal is solid construction and what you'd expect from a boutique style pedal. One thing I noticed was the reviews of this pedal on YouTube were done using Humbucker pick ups which is important because it acts completely different with single coils. It's not as responsive and requires much more pick dynamics to get the pedal to respond. It requires quite a bit of tweaking to get the sound right(wildfire solo sound) and finally I was able to dial it in. This pedal is pretty good. I'd recommend it for humbuckers though. You have to work a little harder for the single coils. But I'd say even then it's worth the purchase and with single coils it adds just a touch of color to your sound.
