British EQ

The British consoles of the 1960s and '70s changed the sound of rock and roll. Without them, the British Invasion might not have even happened. The channel EQ on the XENYX mixers is based on that very same circuitry, allowing you to imbue signals with incredible warmth and detailed musical character. Even when applied generously, these equalizers exhibit sweet forgiveness and superb audio quality. Mono channels on the UFX1204 benefit from the highly musical "British" 3-band EQ with semi-parametric Mid control, allowing you to dial in the frequency center and boost or cut by as much as 15 dB. Channel EQ on the UFX1604 is an expanded 4-band version with sweepable Hi and Low Mids, providing even more tonal optimization. Both models feature individually switchable, true + 48 V phantom power on all mono channels so you can use top-of-the-line studio condenser microphones -- a feature virtually unheard of on a mixer in this class. Stereo channels support balanced and unbalanced 1/4" Line connections and the 4-band "British" EQs are provided for tonal adjustment. All channels feature 4 Aux Sends, switchable Pre/Post FireWire Sends, Mute/Alt 3-4 functionality and super-smooth, long-wearing 60 mm logarithmic-taper faders, and a 100 mm Main Mix fader.

What's a Compressor?

Ask professional sound engineers what their favorite piece of external processing gear is and the response will be virtually unanimous -- dynamic compression. What's compression? Glad you asked. Compression limits the dynamic range of a signal, lowering the level of loud sounds and turning up softer sounds to achieve sonic balance. But applying compression is a delicate art that many novice, and even intermediate, sound techs have difficulty mastering. The "one-knob" compression is available on all mono channels and is easy to operate, even for entry-level users. Now you can easily dial in the perfect amount of compression for instruments and vocals, creating powerful mixes with punch and clarity. The "one-knob" compressors come standard on each and every XENYX QX Series USB mixer.

FX and Functionality

Behringer gave the UFX1204 a very high-end stereo FX processor with 16 editable presets that include reverb, chorus, flanger, delay, phaser, multi-effects and Tap function for the ultimate in live performance enhancement.

Long time Behringer fan (but I also own other manufacturers like QSC, Yamaha, Hartke, and Mackie).I'm a huge Zoom R16 fan even to the point of using it as my main mixer for duos and trios mainly because it would record 8 tracks simultaneously. We record every live performance religiously because it really shows us what we need to improve on and what is already working and sounding great. So when looking for a new mixer, it had to have at least 8 tracks simultaneous recording.I found a warehouse resealed UFX 1204 on zZounds and simply couldn't pass it up.The preamps are good. Effects are good. EQ works fine. But the real power here is hooking up a simple, inexpensive USB3 thumb drive (like a Sandisk Ultra 16, 32, or 64 from Costco) and having the UFX 1204 record ALL tracks as well as the Main Mix. Pure gold! I *did* find out that not all USB thumb drives are the same, speed-wise, and the cheaper ones ended up with drop-outs in the .wav files. But once I picked up some inexpensive 32Gb USB3 thumb drives, I was in fat-city.The UFX 1204 will run a test on the thumb drive and if it's not fast enough it will drop down to 16-bit .wav's (whereas for fast thumb drives, the UFX will record 24-bit .wav's).The mixer is very easy to use, well laid out, and comes with the typical good Behringer quality that I've experienced in my particular part of the world.Plenty of headroom.I like it so much that if I see another blem/reseal, I'll probably grab it as a backup.By the by, I *also* have the read more QSC Touchmix 16 and while it's a great mixer as well, the UFX 1204 is quite a bit easier to use and a tad more intuitive. Nothing against the Touchmix, just trying to help a beginner maybe realize that the UFX might be easier to use since everything is sitting right there (knobs, sliders, etc.) whereas on the Touchmix you have to switch screens a lot.Anyway...great little mixer, will probably pick up another one for backup.
