With 16 specialized preamp voicings, the 12AX7-loaded Behringer MIC200 tube preamp is an incredibly versatile tool for warming up digital recordings.

The Tube Ultragain MIC200 is a high-end vacuum tube mic/line preamplifier with preamp modeling technology and an integrated limiter for studio, live and hard disk recording applications. Behringer's super-flexible preamp modeling allows you to quickly optimize your recordings by choosing from 16 preamp voicings designed for vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, bass guitars, keyboards, drums, and more. In addition, it utilizes a carefully selected 12AX7 vacuum tube with UTC technology for exceptional warmth and low noise.

The MIC200 can be used to warm-up the sterile, analytical sound of standard digital recordings and sound cards. It is also the perfect complement to studio-grade condenser microphones. When used as a high-end DI-box, it provides outstanding signal integrity. The Tube Ultragain MIC200 includes a phase reverse switch, +48 V phantom power and 20 dB pad. Balanced 1/4 in. TRS inputs and outputs and gold-plated XLR connectors provide a nice finishing touch.

This is a great piece of gear, but Behringer erred in using a 12AX7. The gain factor (100) of a 12AX7 is too hot for this preamp and produces significant noise. I've owned four and all four are noisy out of the box. The simple remedy is to swap a 12AU7 (19 on gain factor) and you now have a quiet preamp with tons of warmth and great for making a solid state guitar amp have extra depth, warmth and character, or adding warmth to microphones without distortion or hiss. The 12AX7 of any variety is hissy and distorted in these preamps. I have tried a 12AT7 and 12AV7 in this preamp as well and nothing sounds as good or is as quiet as the 12AU7. The "VALVE" preset is the best preset on this, by the way.
