Audio-Technica ATH-M50s Studio Monitor Headphones

No longer available at zZounds
A straight-cable clone of the popular ATH-M50, these ATH-M50s headphones offer the same durability and superior sound as their predecessor for a great price.

When recording, mixing, and mastering, hearing every detail is essential -- it's what makes a mix translatable across multiple systems. Monitoring with well-rounded headphones like the Audio-Technica ATH-M50s opens up a range of sonic characteristics that are often hard to pick up on when using speakers. The ATH-M50 utilizes a closed-back, over-the-ear design, which helps bring clicks, pops and ambience to the forefront, allowing you to get the sound you need without as much hassle. They're excellent cans for critical listening.

Large Drivers for Superior Sound

By using powerful neodymium magnets rather than the more common ferrite magnets, the Audio-Technica ATH-M50s are able to take advantage of large-aperture 45 mm drivers without adding unwanted weight or bulk. The larger drivers paired with efficient magnets offer many advantages over similarly priced headphones. For instance, exceptional power handling gives the ATH-M50s their clear, extended range of 15 - 28,000 Hz, well beyond the range of human hearing. This helps make sure no subtle harmonic frequency goes unnoticed. Another advantage is a near-instant driver response, which is essential for getting accurate reproduction of drums and other instruments that have a quick attack time.

Foldable Design with Swiveling Earcups

Headed to a remote recording gig or session? These foldable, fully collapsible headphones fit easily in your bag. The ATH-M50's 180-degree rotatable earcups let you monitor with both ears when read more you need to mix in cans, or with one ear while tracking or cueing up mixes. Since cable issues are the most common way for headphones to break, the ATH-M50 headphones come with a nearly 10-foot straight cable, which cuts down on both potential tangles, and damage to the connector when the cable is pulled too hard. Thanks to the lightweight metal design and included carrying case, you can rest assured that these headphones will stand up to the wear and tear of an active musician's life.

Extra Padding for Excellent Isolation

Getting the perfect sound can take time, so it's important to have headphones that will keep pace with your creative process and won't cause any strain during those long mixing sessions. The Audio-Technica ATH-M50s were designed with a padded, fully adjustable headband and earcups, which cuts down on fatigue and lets you focus on your mix. Superior padding isn't only great for comfort, it also adds passive noise isolation. By cutting down on ambience from outside your signal, you'll get a truer idea of your sound. Over time, the thick padding conforms to your head, adding a greater seal and a customized fit.

These are excellent all around cans, if you can only get one pair for casual listening and mixing in a project studio, these should be considered. They are not very well suited for tracking, because the isolation is surprisingly bad considering how snug they form to your head and ears. Also, they sound great, but due to the slightly hyped bass, they don't accurately translate the mix I get with them over to my rokit g5's very suitably, however like any pair of headphones, once your ears get accustomed to the response, you can learn to compensate, which leaves with just a great sounding pair of cans at a great price.

Sound
Slightly boosted low end + Closed Back Cans = Hyped bass Great because that tends to be the trend in modern pop/rock/hip hop/dance, basically most any style of modern music. This was an area of great concern for me because I don't like that overly bassy sound, but I am happy to report that the bass is "plump" but not too "fat". The mid range somehow manages to punch its way through very well too, clear and focused, their are a couple of freq in the upper mids that don't sing quite as loud, but once again, not a big deal. Hi end is subtly sparkly, not at all harsh, but perhaps a tad too crisp, this can be tweaked via eq settings in your device. Cymbals, vocals, solos, and the like are well represented across the board, The detail of the sound is most impressive as you can really hear deeper into the recordings. Hi quality audio read more formats are a must. I didn't notice to much of a "break in" period, sounded good out of the box to my ears.

Features
Straight cord is a must if you plan on mixing, comes with 1/4'' adapter that feels rugged and screws into the 1/8''. Gold plated, cord is a little on the thin side for me, it'll be interesting to see how it does in a year, but at least its not obnoxiously thick or frighteningly thin like my bose cans. Swiveling cans are in awesome feature that everyone will fall in love with, not just dj's. Pad on the headband is not pillow soft like some of the sennhiesers, but once again, this thing carries more of a dual purpose kinda "use in your home studio then pop it in your bag and hit the streets" ruggedness about it.

Ease of Use
Ease of use? Put them on your head. Win.

Quality
Back to the ruggedness of it, I like stuff that feels tough, looks stylish but not goofy, functional and will get plenty of mileage without wearing down and falling apart. I've had these for a month so its too early to say anything about that, But based purely on cosmetics, I'd say this unit looks solid.

Value
Excellent value if you know what your looking for, I find that these are good all around cans and if they were lost or stolen, I'd replace them.

Manufacturer Support
Never dealt with them. But the warranty information is there if I need to.

The Wow Factor
I'm a music teacher, when I pulled those out to show a student a song, he said, "whoa, those are like insane, professional headphones!" How's that for a wow factor. Anyway I love the subtle yet stylish design, the smooth sound. And the fact that I got through this whole review without saying the word "punchy" one time.....oh wait.....dang....
