This guitar combo amp form Albion features a unique preamp section that delivers a classic tube sound.

Get classic British sound built in the Albion factory. The Albion AG40DFX combo amp features a very unique "hybrid" preamplifier section combining a 12AX7/ECC83 tube and high voltage FETs (field effect transistors). This combination of circuit gives great tube sound, at an affordable price. A custom 12 inch speaker gives it the classic tone and the 16 built in digital effects add a whole sonic dimension.

Once upon a time lower entry guitar amp products were just that - low in sound and build quality! The Albion AG range blows that conception totally out of the water! The Albion AG40DFX is designed from the ground up as a "real" guitar amp. Amps that can be proudly used by guitar-players of any standing, from beginner to pro; without spending the "big bucks" of a top-end system. Perfect for practice and club gigs without any sacrificing of tone quality or playing "feel".

The ingredients behind the AG guitar amps, apart from being designed by a top-end designer, come together using a variety of technologies - high voltage FET devices, valves, and good solid-state design. The preamps of each model are a developed family of FET and valve, but unlike many competitive models the preamp technology works at high voltage just like these devices should do for their best performance. This gives a dynamic range, punch, and a tonal response more akin to more expensive pro amps but with much less maintenance than is required for their bigger brothers. These amps will perform consistently read more day after day.

With a guitar amp the sonic quality of the amp is only as good as the speaker system that it is connected to. Throughout the Albion AG series they attempt to use better performing loudspeakers than the competition. For instance in Albion's AG10 model Albion's uses a quality 8 inch speaker as compared to the 6.5" speakers in other brands -- it makes a big, big difference.

I've been looking hard for a small, but not too small, amp. Specifically I wanted to have the otpion of an auxilliary input (iPad, drum machine, etc.) and a headphone out. I did NOT want all the modelling as I have found the volume difference between amp models to be extreme. This amp is ideal for what I wanted. It has two channels and 16 effect that I can turn off and use pedals for if I want. It sounds fantastic! It isn't a tube amp, but I'm not a tube junkie, so that doesn't matter to me. It has tube-like qualities, though...a good thick and meaty tone that cleans up well and handles overdrive without issue. I can easily use this in my basement or for a live gig. I highly recommend this amp.

Sound
I primarily play classic rock and modern country. This amp can get dirty or stay clean and handles both of those easily. I have a Piezo in my guitar, and the acoustic tones sound very nice as well.

Features
Most useful, the included footswitch, the aux input and headphone out. I don't use the built-in effect much, but leaving a little reverb on is a nice touch. The only downside for me is that the controls are on top and toward the back of the top. I want to use it while it is in a bookcase, but because of where the controls are, I have to take it out of the bookcase and put it back when done. Otherwise I can't see the controls and you can't get at the guitar an other inputs. The sound quality makes me read more overlook this, though.

Ease of Use
Very easy to use, except that the effects aren't listed on the amp. However I figure I will easily memorize the ones I use most.

Quality
Seems very solid and well put together.

Value
The amp costs more than others in this category, but the sound blows them away. I tried a Behringer VT30FX and an Acoustic G35FX and returned both. This feels and sounds much more solid.

Manufacturer Support
The folks at Albion have been very friendly with pre-sales advice and responded very nicely to some product suggestions. As a matter of fact, I asked a prelimary question about the effects and got an answer from Steve Grindrod, the company founder.

The Wow Factor
The sound is the wow factor.
