With XXL drivers in a closed, over-ear design, the K271s make superb tracking headphones. There's even a sensor to mute their output when you take them off!

The AKG K271 MK II combines the benefits of AKG's circumaural design for extreme comfort and a closed-back design for maximum isolation from ambient noise. Thanks to its XXL transducers, the AKG K271 MK II sounds clean, smooth and very rich.

The AKG K271 MK II is the perfect choice for any application where sonic bleed could cause problems such as broadcast work.

Another important feature of the K 271 MK II is the addition of a switch in the headband that mutes the audio just as soon as the headphones are taken off.

AKG Varimotion Speakers

The heart of any headphone is the diaphragm. Made of extremely thin foil, the diaphragm is required by transducer designers to perform incredible, almost artistic feats. The rim of the diaphragm must vibrate elastically while the center portion should move like a piston. AKG achieved just that by designing the Varimotion system.

The "sound zone" in the center is thicker than the rim and therefore moves like a piston with no partial oscillations. The result is an absolutely realistic sound, with a better sonic perspective and an airier high end. The rim, or "movement read more zone", is thinner and vibrates more easily, providing a powerful, punchy bass range. read less

"Impressive sound and depth for a closed design. Easily powered 'enough' by an iPod. Definately thin on the low end."

I bought these for the office. I may use these for gaming. Im a bit disappointed in the bass but I expected that going in - and purposely selected them for that reason (though it was a bit less than I expected) and because they are closed. Im not listening to these at ear bleed levels at work and if I use them for gaming, it will cut down on background noises (explosions) to help locate targets which is desirable.

Sound
Im amazed at how well these sound for a closed design. I have the K701 which are great at making the sound seem further away. The K271 does a nice job there. I tested these from a standard PC sound card prior to testing on an amplifier and quality source. I am very impressed with the sound and perceived depth when listening to 3D type sounds. I suggest you look up Virtual Barbershop. Even though these were played through a 2 channel source, the perceived depth is amazing. A mixamp should work very nicely with these. At 15ft away from my TV at normal volume levels, I can still hear the TV through these while nothing is playing. Its very faint - but trying to give you an idea. They dont "seal" the sound out - some bleeds through but the instant you apply slight volume, you cant hear outside sounds very easily. Im happy with the way these sound - especially for a closed design. Other reviews say they lack bass while others claim they just dont "over do" the bass. Well, if you look at many of the available sound tests read more and frequency response tests, you can clearly see these are mostly flat - but do in fact roll off at 80-90hz sharply towards 40hz. They also have a peak in the upper range - but so do a lot of other high end cans and its not distracting or even really noticable. These have bass, but it is definately on the weak side. Im not trying to compare that to cans that "over do" bass, Im comparing specifcally to the K701 which are also a tad bit light on bass, but not as much as these. I encourage you to read the many reviews and view the many tests and graphs so you can "see" what others claim they hear. Other than slightly lean on the low end, I recommend these for quiet listening and flat response with nice depth. I plan on using these for the office to drown out co-workers and prevent my non-work-appropriate music from bleeding out. These also do not have a high resistance and can easily be played with an iPod / iPhone without an amp. Obviously the amp helps but these play plenty loud with just an iPod. They dont get to ear bleed levels but they are loud enough at full volume especially given the closed design. These will also be powered well enough by a mixamp if used for gaming.

Features
Detachable cord which I understand is the same as the K702. 2 are included and 1 of them is a shorter coil cord. Includes screw-on 1/4 adapter. My K701 came with a stand which these did not - but otherwise everything you need including a velvet set of ear pads to swap the already attached very soft pleather pads. The auto-adjust headband is great. Loved it on my K701 as well. There is an auto-mute when the headband isnt stretched. I didnt think Id care for it but I think it will come in handy in the office so my tunes arent heard when I leave my desk or when I pull the cans off my head and wrap them around my neck to take a phone call. My K701s keep playing and the speakers are pointing right at the telephones mic - sometimes I forget to turn them down. Oops.

Ease of Use
It plays what you put into it - other than slight rolloff on lower frequencies.

Quality
Ive had no problems with my K701 - I dont anticipate any with these. They include a spare cable and ear pads. They are very attractive.

Value
If you pay the suggested price, I believe these are a bit pricey and Id consider others. I like these but they can be found for less which would make them more worth it.

The Wow Factor
I like the looks. As mentioned above they are attractive.
