Adam A8X Powered Studio Monitor

No longer available at zZounds
The largest of ADAM's workhorse AX monitors, the A8X delivers deep, tight bass through a 8.5" woofer and stratospheric highs via the X-ART ribbon tweeter.

Considering investing in a pair of studio monitors? Ask a pro audio engineer, and chances are you'll hear the name "Adam." Adam studio monitors have long been associated with incredible accuracy, premium components -- and a price within reach of mere mortals. The Adam A8X features extended-range ribbon tweeters and re-engineered bass drivers for a more three-dimensional, focused sound. If you're considering studio monitors of this caliber, you'll find Adam monitors live up to their name in every respect.

ADAM AX Series monitors have been an industry standard for a decade. See why in this video:

Adam's Trademark X-ART Ribbon Tweeters

The A8X incorporates one of Adam's instantly recognizable folded-ribbon tweeters. These distinctive high-frequency drivers don't just look good; with no heavy voice coils to them weigh down, Adam's tweeters push air four times more efficiently than traditional domed designs. An update to the ART (Accelerating Ribbon Technology) tweeter found in the original A8, the X-ART folded-ribbon driver extends the A8X's top end up to 50 kHz. The "X" in A8X stands for "extended frequency response" -- and for you, it means flatter phase response, longer sessions without listening fatigue, and mixes that "breathe" more naturally.

Effortless Low-End, No Sub Necessary

On the "low" side of its 2.5 kHz crossover, the AX8 sports a 8.5-inch bass/mid driver with a Rohacell/carbon-fiber cone -- which is much more rigid than the typical paper or read more plastic-polymer variety, while still remaining lightweight. Driving the driver is a beefy 150-watt Pulse Width Modulation amp. Two front-firing bass ports extend the clear, precise low end without overhyping your bass, while the rear control panel allows you to compensate for speaker placement with a 300 Hz shelving filter adjustable to +/- 6 dB. With 150 watts of dedicated power behind a low end that reaches down to 38 Hz, most users won't need to install a separate subwoofer.

German Engineering

As truly professional reference monitors, every Adam A8X is rigorously tested in the Adam Audio factory in Berlin, and it's clear their engineers have considered every detail. For your convenience, a master gain control is located on the front panel, right next to the power switch. If you've ever had to play Twister just to turn on or turn up your monitors in a studio setting, you'll immediately appreciate this design. You'll also find both RCA and XLR inputs on the rear panel.

Features:

- X-ART tweeter delivers stunning high-end response up to 50 kHz
- Redesigned 8.5-inch mid/low driver with a 1.5-inch voice coil
- Biamplified design: 50-watt tweeter amp, 150-watt mid/low amp
- Front-panel power switch and gain control
- Rear-panel +/- 4 dB high-frequency gain control
- Rear-panel +/- 6 dB shelf filters for >5 kHz and - XLR and RCA inputs
- Adam's 5-year warranty

Professional engineers and industry publications have been nearly unanimous in their praise of the Adam A8X. Whoever said "You don't know him from Adam" was definitely not talking about reference monitors.

Adam A8X Active Studio Monitor

With its power and radiation characteristics, the brand A8X is suitable for both nearfield and midfield monitoring. With a price/performance ratio that could hardly be better, this monitor is a perfect entry into these monitoring fields.

The A8X is equipped with the X-ART tweeter and a large (8.5") midwoofer, a combination that adds both a very deep and yet very tight bass response to the unsurpassed reproduction qualities of the ADAM proprietary tweeter: a licence to thrill.

Cabinet- and Bass Reflex-Construction

Like the other AX-Series models, the upper corners of the A8X are slanted to minimize reflections. The very large, double bass reflex tubes on the front have been specifically designed to perfectly match the midwoofer with its large voice coil.

Amplification and Controls

With a 50W A/B amplifier for the tweeter and a 150W PWM amplifier for the midwoofer, the A8X has power in abundance and is the brawny monitor of the AX-Series.

On the rear panel are several controls: a gain for the high frequencies (+/- 4dB) and two shelf filters for the high and low frequencies. There are both XLR (balanced) and RCA (unbalanced) connectors on the rear panel of the speaker, which allow the A8X to be used in almost any application.

I am primarily a Rap/HipHop Producer, I make Beats, Record Vocals and Mix & Master. I started out with a set of the KRK 5's gen 1, then i added a set of the yahmaha 5's, then i added a set of Gen 2 KRK rokit 8's, and now i have the A8X's. there was a transitional period for me when i made the switch from the rokit 8's to these. the amount of detail in the sound is awsome, it's not a pleasuring type thing, but more what u need to hear. the ribbon tweeters deff help not fatigue your ears over long sessions, i use my adams 7 days a week 10-14 hrs a day and my mixes are the same threw the whole day. my current setup is the A8X's and the yahmaha 5's, in between the 2 sets, i feel pretty much set. i recommend these monitors for sure, there are many options at this price point, but you will have to search outside of guitar center/zzounds, but these monitors are A+++ and just to clarify on the "Port Noise" rumor, the only time i get the port noise is when my bass isnt mixed yet and is too loud, so basically if you get the noise, its because your not doing something right.
