Shure PGX24/SM58 UHF Wireless Microphone System

No longer available at zZounds
The Shure PGX24/SM58 wireless system sets up with the touch of a button, yet provides crystal-clear vocals for your performance.

If you've got a roadie, count yourself lucky. Most musicians, speakers, and presenters have to load-in and set up their own gear. Not only do you need a strong back for all that heavy lifting, you've got to have a good understanding of the equipment to use it correctly. Speakers, cables, and power amplifiers are fairly self-explanatory, but some music gear can be kind of a hassle for non-technical performers. Wireless microphone systems, for example, present some unique challenges if you're unfamiliar with the technology. Carrier frequencies and RF interference aren't exactly everyday terms; and how about squelch? Is that even a real word? If you've been wanting to add wireless freedom to your stage performance but don't have a firm grasp on the technology, Shure's PGX system is just what you've been waiting for. Its easy-to-use interface will have your message floating through the air faster than you can say "modulated frequency companding."

One Button Configuration

The basic wireless concept isn't all that hard to understand. It works sort of like your own private radio station. The wireless microphone transmitter broadcasts your message, and the receiver picks it up when tuned to the correct channel. Sure sounds simple, but some wireless systems can be difficult to configure. The PGX24 couldn't be easier, though. With the push of a button, it automatically finds the cleanest, interference-free channel available, and instantly handles all the configuration on its own. read more You can spend your valuable time checking cue cards, tweaking your set list, or any other pre-show rituals you may have; your wireless gear is ready to go.

Tone-Tweaking Functions, Right on the Microphone

Don't let the ease of use fool you; this is a sophisticated system. There are plenty of additional functions to help you fine-tune your sound, should you ever need them. Do you have a big voice? If it sounds boomy or harsh through the microphone, just enable the -10dB pad. This reduces the overall input level, which can help smooth-out the sound. If the microphone isn't getting enough of your vocals and the audience is straining to hear what you're saying, you can boost the input gain (volume) and take-in more of your performance. To prevent the microphone from picking up any sound during a break in the action, use the mute function. This can help reduce annoying feedback squeals when the microphone is not in use. Some systems require these changes to be made all the way back by the wireless receiver, but this isn't always practical. You don't want to be running back and forth in the middle of a performance, for example. With the PGX24's wireless range of up to 300 feet, this could be quite a chore! Shure gives you easy access to all these functions, right onboard the microphone. You may never have to use them, but it's nice to know they're within easy reach.

Wireless Version of the Famous SM58

If you've got even the slightest experience with microphones, chances are good you've heard of Shure. Their legendary reputation as a manufacturer of quality musical gear is known all over the world. This system includes a wireless version of their most popular handheld microphone: the SM58. It has a specially tuned frequency response for vocals, delivering clear, natural tone for both singing and speech. The sweetened midrange gets your message across with power and presence, while its unidirectional pickup pattern automatically rejects unwanted sounds from the back and sides. The audience is free to focus on your voice, anywhere you choose to roam, with no distractions. The wireless transmitter can operate for up to eight hours on two AA batteries.

Compatible with Any PA System

Do you currently have a PA system with a wired microphone, and aren't sure if it's compatible with wireless microphones? There's nothing to worry about. Shure's PGX receivers have a balanced three-pin output connection for standard XLR mixer channels, as well as an unbalanced 1/4-inch output jack. Using one or the other, you can plug into any audio environment, from a basic karaoke machine to a full-blown professional audio installation. It's easier than ever to add unconstrained wireless capability anywhere you can book a performance. Shure includes a rugged, foam-lined carrying case to protect the microphone and receiver during transport and storage, and an AC adapter for convenient, long-lasting power.

"Shure PGX24SM58 Fair for the money"

Overall: 3 out of 5 stars

If i could find a better product in the same price range, i would buy it. It works fairly well for what i use it for. If a have a touring act i rent a higher quality system. If I owned more expensive systems, I wouldn't use them for the local variety shows I do.
Sound
Mic sounds great after you have exceeded the compander threshold. If you have an artist that sings just at the threshold, you get some wonkie sounds.
Features
The transmitter only has two gain settings. The higher (factory) setting easily clips the receiver. The lower setting works best, but you've really got to be on the mic for for good gain.
Ease of Use
Transmitter and receiver are a snap to set up. Easy to get several systems working together. The one button operation with lockout keeps amateur performers from turning off the transmitter.
Quality
My only complaint is the battery cover. The plastic is thin at the threads. Performers tend to twist the body of the mic when they are nervous, and the battery cover cracks at the threads,
Value
I have six of the these systems. I generally reinforce local variety shows. I haven't found a better system in the price range.
Manufacturer Support
Shure is great. The replacement battery covers are inexpensive, ans Shure ships them quickly. Any repair returns turn around quickly.
The Wow Factor
It's a tool. It does a job.
