"Finally a good affordable flash live recorder"

Feature:
The battery life seems pretty good. I'm using NiMH 2500 mA energizers, and recorded for an hour and a half straight without any dip in the battery level. My only major complaint with the R9 as a HiMD replacement is the inability to split and splice together adjacent tracks. This means that if you want to record an entire show, you have to record the whole thing as one file and split it up on a computer later. A minidisc recorder will allow you to insert and remove track marks at will. A big improvement over the R1 is the input control. The R1 has a dial for this, which is not great if you'd like to throw the unit in your pocket or a bag. This unit has two buttons for input control, which can be locked with the hold switch.

Quality:
It seems pretty sturdy so far, with the exception of what seems to be a really crappy cover for the battery/sd card slot/usb port area. I bought a warranty from the store because of just this!

Value:
Probably the best live recorder for the money on the market today.

Desirability:
Definitely not as sexy as the HiMD recorder, but leaps and bounds above the R1 and the M-Audio MicroTrack.

Sound:
I have a Sony HiMD MZRH10 and the sound quality on the R9 is just as good. The built in mic so far sounds great(I've had it for two days), although it's not ideal if you're recording live, since you'd want something shock mounted in that situation to avoid bump sounds.

Ease of Use:
I found this very easy to use, although I'm tech savvy. I've had to refer to the manual only once so far, to find out how to delete a track, which I didn't find intuitive. Otherwise, input level is easily modified as mentioned above, as opposed to my HiMD recorder, which always required several rushed steps to get the sound I wanted.

Support:
No Experience.

Overall:
I'm very impressed so far. I'm just bummed that it lacks track marking capability.

"The best of the best - This unit ROCKS!"

Feature:
This unit doesn't come with any extra covers to protect it but since it's made of plastic it is pretty tough. Some reviewers have complained that the unit is made out of plastic but I'm glad it is because plastic is far more durable than metal. This is a well thought out recorder. No complaints.

Quality:
I like the quality of this unit. No complaints. I am going to buy the protective cover/tripod for this though.

Value:
Good value for the money.

Desirability:
Of all the units out there (M-Audio, Zoom, Marantz, etc.)this is the one that has been designed with the "Sex Appeal". It just looks good.

Sound:
I find the sound of this unit very good. I also think the reverbs presets are good I only wish I could record with them instead of just playback. The included microphone is very good and I have had no problems with hiss or distortion, however the mics are sensitive and pick up everything.

Ease of Use:
Very easy to use. Even the battery replacement is no big deal. You just have to be careful when you change the batteries. Its easy once you get the hang of it. The manual is easy to use but you don't really even need to read it because this unit very user friendly.

Support:
Good support from Roland but haven't had to contact them.

Overall:
The only thing I will buy for this unit is the case/tripod and maybe the external microphone. I plan on using this unit for years to come.

About This Product!
Overview
Description
From Our Catalog
Edirol's slimmest mobile recorder!
Edirol is no stranger to mobile digital recording. Their R-1 and R-4 recorders are extremely popular, with numerous functions and an easy-to-use interface. The next generation R-09 recorder places the best features of its predecessors in half the space (about 2" x 4" x 1.25"), for better portability and pristine recording.

Onboard condenser mic
The R-09 uses an onboard condenser microphone for high-quality 24-bit digital audio capture. The microphone can be run in mono- or stereo-mode depending on your intended source. Mono may be adequate for lectures, podcasts, or interviews, while stereo is better for sample-gathering or music. You get a low-cut filter and a gain boost with peak indicator to be sure your incoming signal is at its best. Vocals will have more clarity, and the signal will be strong and clean without excess noise muddying up your tracks. The integrated reverb effect helps add lush ambience to an otherwise dry take. Long, eye-drooping speeches will gain some much-needed life and color. While you can't make the content any more interesting, the speaker will thank you for making them sound so good.

Sample rates, storage, and power
You can further tailor your recordings with the sample-rate selector. Choose from CD-quality 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz .wav format, or up to 320 kbps .mp3 files. A 48 kHz uncompressed .wav file will give you the best quality, while a compressed .mp3 will give you more recording space. With the R-09, you can base your choice on your project, instead of having the choice forced upon you by the limitations of a lesser recording device. The R-09 supports up to a 2GB SD card, which will hold 110 minutes of 24-bit, 48 kHZ audio, or over 33 hours of mp3's! Any size project is now within your reach. Use two AA alkaline or nickel hydrogen batteries, or the included AC adapter for hours of power.

External input connection
For more controlled recording situations, Edirol included a 1/8 in. jack to accept external mic or line input sources. Use a lavalier mic to discreetly record a solo speaker for lectures or interviews. In most cases, your subject will be more relaxed and confident than they would be if you shoved a microphone up in their face. For recording live music, a simple patch cable lets you take a feed right from the mixer for direct audio transfer. Use the 'Tape Out' connection for the overall sound, or use a free Aux bus for a dedicated recording mix if the board supports it. Either way, you'll capture the band's sound without any annoying and possibly track-ruining color commentary from the audience. If you've ever tried to use a microphone while standing next to an unruly fan, you can definitely appreciate the value of the line-in connection.

Flexible output options
During playback, a second combo mini-plug gives you multiple listening options. For quick reference and personal monitoring, use your favorite pair of headphones. You can check the input signal in real time without disturbing the performance, or double-check your take to make sure yo didn't miss anything. The line output is a convenient way to share the playback with others. Plug it into a portable powered speaker or a free channel on the mixer and out comes the sound. For musicians, the R-09 is perfect for playing background tracks during breaks in your set. It's a good idea to play music similar to your own so the crowd doesn't lose interest while you're away from the stage. Back in the studio, the combo jack acts as an optical digital output for making on-the-fly copies of your projects. Hook it up to a digital CD burner and you've got instant duplicates with no loss of quality.

USB support
If you prefer to edit and process your tracks before duplication, the USB I/O port lets you transfer files to and from your computer with ease. Prepare your output for distribution, and you'll be sure every track sounds just the way you want it. Clip out long pauses during podcasts to help everything flow smoothly. Record a riff you've been working on, then drop it into your mixing software to blend it with the rest of the song. Computer hard drives are great for archiving your audio for later use. That sound byte you recorded last year might be just what you need for this week's project. With the R-09 and USB, you can save it all.

Capture ideas quickly
Singer/songwriters will want an R-09 for use as a "digital sketchpad." It has never been easier to jot down those quick bits of inspiration as they pop up. Hum the melody into the onboard mic, or strum your acoustic to remember the chord changes for tonight's rehearsal. The R-09 is great for non-music related capture as well. Students can record lectures and prevent writer's cramp caused by furious note-taking. Journalists can replace their antiquated mini-cassette recorders and get every word of the interview with accuracy and clarity. With its compact size and extended battery life, there are no limits to where you can take it.

Included accessories
Edirol's R-09 recorder includes an owner's manual, AC adapter, 64MB SD card, and mini-USB cable.
Pristine 24-bit recording to go!

Over the past year, EDIROL sold a staggering number of R-1 and R-4 recorders, making "Portable Recording" one of the most successful product categories in the company's portfolio. Now comes a new addition to the red-hot lineup: the R-09. Building on the success of the R-1, the R-09 takes many of the most desired features - 24-bit uncompressed recording and a built-in stereo mic - and shrinks it all down into a more streamlined, stylish, and affordable package.

Features
24-bit/48kHz (or 44.1kHz) uncompressed recording

Up to 320kbps MP3 playback and recording

Records to SD card (64MB card included)

High-grade stereo condenser microphone built in

Mic and Line audio inputs; USB I/O

Easy operation, user-friendly graphic display

Ultra portable, half the size of the R-1

Long battery life

Crystal-Clear Capture
It's ultra small and looks like a gadget, but make no mistake - the R-09 is a serious, top-quality professional recorder. Capture source material at a crystal-clean 24-bit resolution with your choice of 44.1 or 48kHz sample rates. You can record and play back in MP3 format as well (up to 320kbps). Once recorded, your files can be monitored through the R-09's headphone jack and/or exported to a computer via USB.

Microphone Included
To record audio into the R-09, there's no extra gear to buy or no cables to connect. A quality stereo microphone is built right into the unit, complete with a dedicated input control, mono/stereo selector, low-cut filter, and gain boost. Just point and record! If you wish to use an external microphone, the R-09 offers a 1/4 in. mic input.

Sweetening
The R-09 is more affordable than its predecessor, the R-1. One reason the R-1 carries a heavier price tag is because of its well-stocked lineup of internal effects. The R-09 isn't devoid of effects, however. It contains the world's most-requested/desired effect: reverb. Whether you're listening to WAV or MP3 files, you can route the R-09's playback through its internal reverb processor, immersing it in lush, user-controllable ambience.

More Than Music
The R-09 is perfect for capturing live music events, recitals, and rehearsals. It's also handy as a songwriter's sketchpad, ensuring that no moment of inspiration is lost. But the R-09 has many valuable uses outside of the music world as well. Students can use it to record lectures. Broadcasters and journalists can throw away their antiquated cassette recorders and use the R-09 for in-the-field interviews. Wherever, whenever there's a need to capture audio, the R-09 can do it hassle-free thanks to its built-in microphone and long battery operation.
