Feature:
Featured well beyond the limits of this price range. Pad and Roll Off are effective without sacraiicing clarity.
Quality:
It is a true AKG, in spite of the Price!
Value:
While a different Timbre, the RODE NT1-A is the only thing that comes close. The AKG fits my vocal color better than the RODE, but that is purely a personal situation/quality.
Sound:
Two Qualifiers:
It's Great once you get to Know it. It is a Large Diaphram, so the Highs are soft, by definition. That's what you need to know. Performance depends on placement, capture settings, and as with all Large Diaphram Condensers, a Mic Pre (minimum: the Pre Sonus BlueTube, or higher) if you want to contour the sound quality.
Two: It's performance is worth five times the price. Clearly, they are giving these away to get you to know the AKG line (Well worth knowing, in my opinion, per the 414, etc.).
Overall:
At this budget level, it is a marvel. I have the RODE NT1-A, as well, for home recording, and will soon add an AKG small condenser cardioid and, likeky a 414.
Best is its flexibility of contour with a good Mic Pre up front, however, it pattern is fairly broad and not very sensitive to proximity differentiations, hard to get "intimate" with. However, a dampened room solves all that, pretty well. Takes a bit of boost from the Pre to make it jump, however.
