"Squire makes a Les Paul Tele"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Les Paul tone from the set neck, 24.75" scale, dual humbucker, 3way toggle, 2 tone, 2 volume. It weighs in north of 9 pounds, so it is "chambered" but entirely mahogany. Mine is the satin black, which has weathered nearly 20 years looking great. Binding on body and neck. Satin neck is a joy, slick feeling and not gluey-gloss. Neck inlays are nice. Tuners are whatever Cor Tek Korea was making in 2005, and they do fine. No issues noted with tail/tunamatic bridge. Someone at Squire clearly was going for a nut shot at Gibson, and this run of Master Chambered Telecasters was ONE year only..but the idea of a 24.75 scale length set neck with 2 humbuckers has been revisited over the years by Squire and Fender. This is just one of the earliest examples that pulled it off really cleanly. Squire appears to be the "experimental" division of Fender, where they can get wild and where failure is not going to sink the ship. The successes make it up to the flagship brand in different iterations like Parallel Universe Telecaster Troublemaker, Kingfisher Telecaster, or the Special Edition Telecaster Custom FMT, but the set neck only goes with the Custom FMT from what ive seen. This is not "squire quality" bad. It is part of the Master Series, the best Squires of the era. The Master Chambered Teles are exceedingly rare, and they do exactly what their intended purpose was; to troll Gibson and fill the same role as a Les Paul. This era was when Fender purchased De Armond, rebadging their LP clones read more as Squiers briefly to unload the already paid for guitars De Armond was producing, but the Tele seems like a more egregious shot below the belt. The Squire Master Series, by and large, are expensive, great guitars.Probably never going to be one of those guitars that ramps up in value due to the name on the headstock, but if you respect the build and get it, and if you see one for sale...buy it and enjoy it. Squire nailed it. Youd have to spend between 4-10 times the amount to find something Fender slapped their logo on with the same features.
