"This Is the Hook-Up"

Feature:
The unit is loaded with all the features you'll need and then some. The on-board drums are fun and once you get the hang of editing them, you're off and running. (That takes some time.) The display is simple to read and the dials and buttons give the user the sense that a musician must have had a hand in developing this. It's fairly straight forward.

Quality:
I bought a floor model and there's no question it probably took a little knock here or there, but after all that the only thing wrong is that one of the one knob is just slightly loose. That's it. The thing seems solid enough with all the components fitted neatly into the package.

Value:
I got my floor model about a year ago for the current retail price, so the price has come down on what I considered to be an affordable unit.

Desirability:
How can a man get excited about a recorder? It's not easy. It's supposed to be a job doer and this is it. Maybe a bigger screen would convince me to give the unit a '10' but then again, that might make it more expensive.

Sound:
The sound reproduction on the recorder is just great. There are plenty of effects available which offer a huge array of sounds. I've had good luck with vocals recordered directly into the unit, but I've found that the bass tracks sound best when the signal runs through my amp first, then into the unit. (I'm sure that's true for plenty of folks.)

Support:
If there were an eleven available to rate support, Roland would get it from me. The personnel were simply great. I called a few different times and each representative was patient and thorough. Ultra high marks from me for customer relations.

Overall:
This recorder will meet the needs of a wide variety of musicians. Beginners can record quasi-studio quality material. Advanced players can produce solid demos. It stomps out CDs effortlessly and cleanly. It's quiet, functional and practical. A friend with an older version convinced me to kick out the cash for the recorder. I'm glad I did. I was fortunate to have guidance from a buddy, because -- let's face it -- the sheer amount of recorders available can be a tad intimidating. If you can make the leap of faith and get this, I think you'll be pleased.

"The best home recording studio/cd burner I have ever had the pleasure of working with."

Where do you start? The upgraded drum machine from the BR_532 is just great. It allows for easy drum patterns for anyone who can't even play them. The FX's are amazing, there's something for every style here. The machine is so easy to use, as the menu's are so straight forward. The CD burning ability takes out all the hastle of having to buy a seperate recorder, or doing it through the computer. It has so many editing functions which make it easily possible to record all your tricky parts of a song, and still sound sh*t hot. I personally had mine pre-ordered weeks before it came to the UK. This is not a downfall, but I do think that 1 improvement could be to allow you to record and play it backwards, which was the only thing I liked about analogue recording, as it makes for some interesting sounds.

About This Product!
Description
Docs
Boss is proud to announce the BR-1180 and 1180CD Digital Recording Studio. The BR-1180 Digital Recording Studio takes Boss's "manual shmanual" concept to the next level. This powerful digital studio gives you 8 playback tracks, a stereo Master Track, and 80 Virtual Tracks for recording. There's also a 20GB hard drive and an internal CD-RW drive to burn your music to CD. And with killer Boss effects and a separate Rhythm Track with sampled drum sounds, there's nothing you can't do.

Features
Self-contained 10-track digital recording studio with stereo Master Track and 80 Virtual Tracks

20GB hard drive; Supports linear recording in addition to other modes

Built-in CD-RW drive (BR-1180CD), or optional upgrade (user-installable) for BR-1180

Easy icon-based interface simplifies recording, bouncing, and mixing

New!Massive 80-Track Recording
The BR-1180 provides 10 primary tracks for recording and playback. This includes a new stereo Master Track which can be used for easier mixdowns and bouncing. Since each of these primary tracks contains 8 Virtual Tracks, there are a total of 80 recording tracks available. And with a 20GB internal hard drive, you'll have plenty of recording time, whether you choose one of the BR-1180's space-saving recording modes or the new linear recording option.

Feel the Burn with a CD-R/RW Drive
If you want to burn CDs, simply choose the BR-1180CD with a CD-R/RW drive built-in. But even if you buy the standard BR-1180 model, you can easily upgrade it to a BR-1180CD later by purchasing an optional CD-R/RW kit. This internal drive can be user-installed in minutes. Now you can burn audio CDs and back up the internal hard drive at blazing speeds.

Onboard COSM Effects and Mastering Tools
With the BR-1180, there's no need for noisy external effects. Whether recording a microphone, guitar, or keyboard, you'll find exactly what you need. The BR-1180 is so smart, it even selects the effect type (Insert or Loop) based on the input you're recording. You get everything from reverb and delay to killer COSM Guitar Amp, Speaker and Mic Modeling, plus Mastering Tool Kit for sweetening up the final mix.

Built-in Rhythm Track and More
If you're looking for drums, tap into the BR-1180's new Rhythm Track: It's got sampled drum sounds and plenty of Preset patterns for creating drum tracks without using recording tracks. You can even import new patterns via Standard MIDI Files or load loops in .WAV format for playback. Other handy features include a Phrase Trainer for slowing down guitar licks, a built-in chromatic tuner, and 2 XLR Microphone inputs with phantom power.
