If you could have a guitar designed to your exact specifications, what would it look like? Would it have a shiny, pristine finish -- or something with a little more character? When Donal Gallagher met with Fender to design a guitar as homage to his late brother, Irish blues-rock legend Rory Gallagher -- they chose the latter. The result is the Fender Custom Shop Rory Gallagher Tribute Stratocaster -- an exact replica of Rory's worn-to-the-wood, extensively modified 1961 Stratocaster. Although Rory's original guitar is now retired, this Custom Shop masterpiece stands as a tribute to what may have been the very first Stratocaster in Ireland -- and it boasts a design as intriguing as Rory's career.

A Much-Loved Finish, Faithfully Recreated

Rory Gallagher's guitar was most striking for its extremely worn finish, thanks to years of continuous touring. Starting with a solid alder body, Fender Custom Shop designers painstakingly recreated the wear pattern found on the original instrument, with just a few remains of the three-color sunburst finish still clinging to the wood. Like the original, this Stratocaster is outfitted with an early '60s "C"-shape maple neck and rosewood fingerboard with 21 jumbo frets. Aged nickel and chrome hardware and an aged white plastic three-ply pickguard complete the picture, and just like on Rory's instrument, a white plastic dot at the twelfth fret replaces a missing clay dot inlay.

Rory Gallagher's Custom Modifications

Gallagher's… read more revered instrument had a few other modifications now meticulously recreated by the Custom Shop in this tribute Strat. Three custom-wound single-coil pickups are selectable with a custom-wired 5-way selector switch. A close look at the headstock reveals five Sperzel die-cast tuning pegs and one mismatched Gotoh peg, as well as a bone nut that resembles the replacement nut installed by the man himself.

Fender Custom Rory Gallagher Strat

Fender Custom Shop designers met Donal Gallagher, brother of the late, great Rory Gallagher, in 1997 at Los Angeles International Airport and received a gig bag holding one of the most coveted guitars of all time-Rory's worn-to-the-wood 1961 Stratocaster guitar. Fender initially built 40 "clones" for the European market, and was subsequently besieged with requests for more.

The Rory Gallagher Tribute Stratocaster guitar is an exact replica of that revered instrument, right down to the extremely worn 3-Color Sunburst alder body, maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. We've even included five Sperzel tuners and one Gotoh tuner, and we've replaced the 12th-fret dot marker with white plastic instead of the original clay. It also features three custom-wound '60s single-coil pickups, aged chrome hardware, 21 jumbo frets and a bone nut. Our homage to a true and truly missed master.
