The Electribe series of Dance Tools defined a new standard, combining unique sound generation, pattern based programming, and intuitive knob-based interfaces. Thousands of forward-thinking musicians, DJs and producers continue to use them to create exciting and groundbreaking music.
The ELECTRIBEMX represents a new generation of Electribes - powerful dance music products that cover everything from laying down stunning tracks to creating exhilarating live performances. The EMX-1 comes housed in a sleek, rugged metal chassis. The new backlit LCD provides a wealth of information during programming or performance.
The intuitive step-time/realtime interface has been enhanced with a new Ribbon and Slider control. Effects, Motion Sequencing, and Pattern length have all been expanded. A brand-new filter lets you chose Low Pass, High Pass, Band Pass or Band Pass Plus.
Up to 256 patterns can be created and stored to the internal memory. You can combine patterns, add mute data and knob movements to create up to 64 songs. To get you started, a wide assortment of patterns covering house, hip-hop, R&B, electronica, drum'n'bass, techno, trance and more come preloaded - 196 in the ELECTRIBEMX. Using the last step function, you can easily adjust to any odd meter. Favorite patterns can be assigned to Pattern Sets for instant access. Data can be quickly saved and loaded via SmartMediaTM.

Powered by one of the most advanced synthesizer engines in the world, the ELECTRIBEMX provides everything needed to create sophisticated dance music - nine drum parts, five synth parts, plus accent parts that let you add dynamic accents to the drum and synth parts (for a total of 16 parts).
The all-new MMT (Multi Modeling Technology) offers sixteen different oscillator algorithms, providing powerful analog synthesis models as well as sophisticated additive, PCM, chord, unison, combination, wave shaping, formant models and more. The built-in PCM library includes 207 drum PCM sounds and 76 synth PCM sounds ready for immediate use, ranging from powerful kicks and snares through amazingly unique organic sounds. External audio signals can be manipulated using the Comb Filter oscillator algorithm, and then further processed by the internal filter and effects.

3 Stereo Effect Processors to Radically Change Your Sound
The highly acclaimed Electribe effects have been enhanced to provide three multi-effect units available for simultaneous use. Each part can be independently routed to any of the three effects processors, and you can even use the Chain function to link multiple effects in series, opening up further sonic possibilities. Each processor offers 16 effect types ranging from traditional reverb, delay, flanger and chorus, as well as more modern offerings including tempo-based delay, talking modulator, grain shifter, decimator and more. The edits you make to each of the effects processors are saved with each pattern.

For a drum part, touching the ribbon will trigger notes, and sliding your finger up and down will change the note resolution.
Motion Sequencing Brings Your Songs to Life
Motion Sequencing records your realtime knob tweaks and plays them back as part of the pattern. Two types of motion sequence are provided; one for effects and one for parts, and you can also edit the value of individual steps. Up to 24 motion sequences can be used in a single pattern, allowing you to control virtually every sound parameter. The Step Edit function allows you to adjust the value of individual steps.

this should not be your only sound source, lets be clear about that. the more money you can put into a studio the better.
if you are creative you can get more than you expected with the emx. your friends will wonder what happened to you, since you are spending more time with the emx than them. you can start here or end here with the emx for being under 500.00us. but if you want to grow you will want that other thing that will make you sound diffrent and unique. this has the ability to be moldable. while you are playing with it you can be saving up for more stuff that you want. maybe a sampler or hardware device.
Sound
the drums are great, lots of vintage drums machine kits like the linn drum, 808, 909. the synth section is a nice gateway addiction in to analog synth patch creation. its really about the tubes, they really make up for how metallic the sound can be with out them. being made by the creators of the muff fuzz boxes. they add lots of nice punch to your drum programming. they give a gnarly edge to the synths parts you will create. it does have some general midi sounds but, you are buying this for it analog modeling synths. the signal is very hot so you will need some kind of compression and limiting out side the box. that's the trend though recently to make your mixes sound hot and loud without distortion. that's up to you to push the envelope. still you will want to leave the emx on for a day before recording to get the best… read more sound. tubes are like that.

the ribbon/slider is truly great, for quick ideas and improving on top of patterns. the audio bpm detection is nice when you are playing with a prerecorded song than with out it.
Ease of Use
the talent of the user will come into playing it and recording decent tracks. the manual was helpful, but i have had experience with sequencers before so this was a clear manual in the case of me. there could be a learning curve with this but not so steep that you will give up. if you are performing you have to hold down two button to engage a track pattern. rather than just pushing one button on or off. but you wont get tired of of playing because of that, more like you have accountable to other aspects in you life. it can be habit forming.
Quality
if you have thick fingers this box will be annoying to perfrom with. all metal case is nice, its light since all the weight is in transformer that you will still have to carry with to gigs. so its more of a looks thing than of a practical thing.
Value
its a bargain no frills beat box. compared to some german counter parts in the thousand dollar range, its a steal for the sound quality. those german ones are made to order, and are quite analog high brow knob tweakers. who enjoy that pastime enough to pay for there addiction to knobs and fat analog sounds. not so reliable onstage either though via midi, you hear me mfb...
