Digidesign Digi 003 Rack Music Production System

No longer available at zZounds
Set your studio up right with the Digidesign 003 production system, combining professional hardware with industry-standard Pro Tools software.

It sure seems like a lot to get a project recording studio off the ground, especially if you're thinking about going digital. Once you decide which software you're going to run (an epic decision in and of itself), you've still got a ton of other purchasing decisions. Which interface should I get? What mics do I need first? Should I get monitors or headphones? What kind of additional software am I going to need to start recording? We feel your pain; heck, most of us have been through the same process already. We want to make professional-quality computer recording accessible to everyone, and that's why we've put together a recording bundle that's centered around one of the most successful home studio computer recording interfaces around: the DigiDesign Digi 003 Rack.

Industry Standard Pro Tools Recording Software

Your new Digi 003 Rack is the key to the world of Pro Tools, the industry-standard recording software that ushered in the digital recording revolution. Pro Tools HD systems are used the world over in the most discriminating studios, and as a Pro Tools user, you'll have a worldwide support network and massive online community to exchange ideas with. You'll also be able to take projects you've been working on at home and transfer them seamlessly to a professional studio environment, and vice versa. Record drums at the studio, then bring those tracks home and overdub guitars and vocals, on your own time. Collaborate on a song with like-minded producers across the read more globe. Hire a session-vocalist in New York for your Minnesota-based project. This kind of international musical community is only possible when you tap into the power of Pro Tools. Pro Tools LE is the native version of the flagship HD system, and is both powerful and simple to learn. With 48 tracks of stereo audio supported, full-fledged MIDI capabilities, extensive virtual mixing and bussing, and pristine audio processing, you'll enjoy the same creative flexibility as any world-class studio.

High-Speed, High Fidelity FireWire Audio

The wider bandwidth that FireWire provides allows for more audio channels while maintaining stable operation. For the Digi 003, FireWire connectivity provides up to eighteen channels of simultaneous I/O. Four microphone preamps with balanced XLR jacks let you connect high-quality studio microphones directly to the interface, with no need for any external hardware. Individual gain and filter controls for each mic input are easily accessible along the front face of the Digi Rack. A total of eight channels of analog input allow for recording of full bands or even live performances, and that channel count is expandable with ADAT and S/PIDF digital I/O. If you do add additional hardware, the Digi 003's super-stable Word Clock keeps everything in sync, eliminating common problems like digital "jitter" that can otherwise taint a professional-sounding project. The 003 Rack's own analog-to-digital converters are top-notch, with a higher than CD-quality 24-bit depth and up to 96 kHz sampling rate. . . you'll be able to accurately capture the musical nuance of any instrument, from a high-gain guitar stack to a classical lever-harp to a warm and jazzy trap kit. There's also MIDI in, out, and thru ports for connecting external sequencers and tempo-syncing MIDI-enabled rackmount effects. With XLR studio and control room outputs as well as dual headphone jacks, you've got plenty of monitor routing options, and the Digi 003's rugged, streamlined, two rackspace chassis is equally at home in your project studio or out on the road.

A Wealth Of Bundled Software

In addition to Pro Tools, the Digi 003 Rack comes bundled with a bounty of virtual instruments and software signal processors to get you started on fully-realized, professional sounding projects right out of the box. Seven virtual instruments including the powerful BOOM! drum machine, a grand piano, a tonewheel organ, and an analog synthesizer plugin will help you realize and produce compositions of any style, from simple to complex. No fewer than seventy audio effects plugins are also included, ranging from compressors, equalizers and reverbs to phasers, delays and pitch-shifting effects. You even get M-Audio's digital DJ software Torq LE, so you can get started on your next hip-hop masterpiece. Expand your tonal palette with thousands of third-party virtual instruments and effects plugins with Pro Tools' support of the RTAS plugin format.

"Great for new Protollers!"

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
I spect to use this thing for a while. Eve if a I get an HD system, I would keep this for homework and field recording.

Sound
Sound is really good. I could notice the sound quality improvement compared to my last interfase (MOTU 896HD, that sounded really good for the price). I also worked on a 002 a couple of times, and I cannot remember the sound was this good. But anyway, that was with other monitors and another room too, so... The pres acomplish there mission and far more. This system is destined for small project studios and perhaps some overdubbing, so they really work fine. If you are looking for some state-of-the-art pres, you should be thinking in spending some more money.

Features
Really good! Lots of ins and outs, mic pres, digital i/o, Pro Tools, Asio drivers, what else... Many people agree that there's been no big improvement since 002, and I think so too, since the i/o's are the same. But the fact is that as I didn't own a 002, and I was looking foward to move to pro tools, this 003 thing with improved converters and at the same price was all that I was asking for, and since I own nothing but a home studio, there is nothing else I need. I can do my recording in an HD system, a SSL console and Neumann mic in a World-Class studio and come back home to edit and make some overdubs on my own. It really works for me.

Ease of Use
Pro Tools makes it all easier once you had taken read more the time to learn the basic shortcuts. After that is all music you think about. And I want to make clear I am not in a MAC, not even a PC, but a PS (Peace-of-Sh**), the hardest way to do things. Ant still was really easy to install and work with it.

Quality
So good! I was wondering what I was going to get when opening the box. The Digi 003 happends to be a really well made, solid, metal, peace of gear. The pots are not the best, though. As for Pro Tools... two words: Rock Solid! (Even in my P4 2.0 PS)

Value
Yeah man! Pro Tools, lots of work, compatibility with each and every studio in the planet, rock solid playback/record.

Manufacturer Support
Ok, this I can't really tell. All I can say is that registering and getting authorization codes for Digidesign soft was really quick. But, as for other manufacturers softs (IK, Celemony, and so on) is a pain in the butt. Copy this, paste that, conect here, check e-mail, go to hell! I cannot say anything about tech support. I live in South America, and I don't think Digidesign knows where that is.

The Wow Factor
Yes. I do.
